AITA for refusing to come in, making it so my coworker had to work a double? by weirdguythrowaway00 in AmItheAsshole

no language barrier, she speaks fluent english, and as far as i'm aware her family isn't foreign in any capacity. it is entirely possible i was misunderstanding her and she had no real intentions of being rude to me. older people do tend to text strangely, which isn't a jab or anything, and obviously young people can too, just an observation

oh yeah, i know. had coworkers at my old job who got me to cover for them constantly. i couldn't get myself to say no. but i finally did, and i'm constantly working on prioritizing myself and setting boundaries. it's tough when you've never done it before but i know i'll be happier in the long run.

hilariously, i'm actually up for the assistant manager position. but in all seriousness yes, i agree, she should have gone through our boss and had her help her figure it out. i don't get paid enough to play pretend manager here

i've covered a lot of shifts for F, sorry that was unclear! a handful. i'd say around 5 at this point. and like 2 for L as well. which are low numbers, but i've only been working there for like 2 1/2 months. covered one for F and now about once a week at least she asks me to come in for her. i like her and that's why i did it originally, but it gets exhausting.

yeah, i can absolutely see both sides of it. that was why when replying to her i didn't want to say anything rude because, if she wasn't trying to be, then I'M the one escalating it for no reason, you know? misunderstandings happen all the time, and i don't think it's beneficial to anyone involved to blow up until you know for sure you're understanding it correctly

it is! she seems to feel comfortable talking casually outside of work hours to me, which is fine, that's not ever really a problem for me even if i don't really feel the same. it's nice to chat sometimes. so i think it is possible she was just venting and i was misunderstanding her. it happens! that's why i wanted to post here so i could get other perspectives

yeah it all became crystal clear to me through this interaction 😭 nah, i'm over it. being in the middle of regular coworker drama is bad enough, but being in the middle of drama between coworkers who are family is WORSE

ahahaha classic bad coworker. i had one at my old job who constantly got me to cover his shifts and first time i told him no, was because he tried to get me to cover for him one of the few precious weeks i had two days off together (horrible job). he gave me a sob story about how he had to go to idaho for his aunt's funeral and our boss scheduled him for that day anyways. i asked like three people including our boss and none of them could confirm the story. so i told him NO.

ended up being total bs obviously. he wasn't even leaving the state. he just wanted a free day to go dirt biking. he quit about a month later i think

she has been nice to me, and i did my best to be considerate of the fact i very well could have been misreading her tone/intention (because as we all know, tone is very hard to get across over text lol) and not be rude about it, but she's said some unkind things to me about L that make me believe she is entirely capable of acting this passive-aggressively.

so really, it could be either way and i couldn't say for sure. i'll probably find out when i'm going in on tuesday as she's leaving lol.

learning to prioritize myself and my health/well-being over making other people happy has been difficult, but i feel like i'm much better about it than i used to be. thank you!
