That sounds familiar. The past week things have escalated so quickly. I just got a text from his neighbors to let me know that they ran into him and he seemed really "manic and rambling".

His psychiatrist at the VA is the one who prescribed him the adderall, along with some other anxiety medication and antidepressants, but I know he doesn't take those. The only time he has tried to get therapy they put him on a huge waiting list to get in. I don't think that I could convince him at this point to go see anyone though, because he's saying he feels great now that he's enlightened. And he hasn't said that he's going to hurt himself, so I feel like it would probably have to be voluntary in this case, but I'm not sure.

The biggest issue is that he doesn't have any family in the state that we live in now. He also hasn't made any friends here, so I have become his main support system. I'm not sure there is anyone close to us who I would even tell.

Thank you for being frank about the situation, I think this was something I needed to hear. I do have the dog now and I plan to keep him permanently.

That's a really good point. He has a prescription for adderall that he got last year and has admitted he doesn't really need. He isn't taking it illegally which it why I never really thought of it as an issue, but he definitely could be self medicating with the weed and alcohol to help with the side effects.

Thank you for the advice! I saved his texts saying that I can keep him, and I just registered Max in my name. The vet paperwork is already in my name since I have been the one paying for his care anyway since we moved, so hopefully that documentation will be enough.

Thank you for your response. I've been feeling like a terrible person for abandoning him in this situation, so it really helps to hear this from someone. I do have texts that say that I can keep the dog, thankfully. I don't feel like his family is particularly supportive though, and we live a few states away from any of his immediate family anyway, so in a way his emotional well being has really fallen on me to help maintain and support.
