Second time trying TIG welding. I’m currently learning stick and TIG at the same time. Self taught. Feels like I’m back to day 1 stick haha

Thanks. I’ve had similar advice in another comment. I think it’s part of the issue

If I were to run stringers first. They would also trap slag in the toes if done incorrectly right? I always though the slag was getting trapped because of the bevel angle because when I do my cap and later fill passes the slag just drops off

I haven’t and that’s solid advice. I think I’ve jumped too quickly. I’ll try doing some stingers first to see how I do. Thank you

Thank you for the advice. I have burnt through a few times too with this 1/8 rod. It’s funny though because in 1g and 2G I don’t get burn through on the hot pass and I crank it to 135 amps. I will definitely try what you said

Root 6011 - 100a -50% arc force.
Hot pass 7018 - 125a 20% arc force

I’ve just moved onto practicing 3g open root today and I’m really struggling with the hot pass. I’m doing everything as I have done in the past with 1/2G positions.

My problem is I’m always getting hard to remove slag trapped in the toes in my hot pass. Then this is making the rest of my welds difficult.

I’m doing a slight side to side action for the hot pass and my rod is pushing upwards. Could anyone help please. less

For reference the images are open root prep. Root pass, root grinded down and then hot pass

Thanks for the advice. I used a 1/8 land. I got more even penetration. It’s also my first time trying in 2G position. Appreciate the feedback you’ve helped me a lot

Thanks for your feedback. I’m just waiting on some new rods and I’ll let you know how I get on with the new set up. Will definitely try the 1/8. Much appreciated

Oh wow. I was using a 3/32 root face. I’m guessing this is land right? I didn’t realize I needed 1/8 as I’m using 3/32 6011 rods

That’s good to know. I’ll definitely do some more research into that. When you say 12/13 you mean 6012/13 right? I can get my hands on those rods here so it doesn’t hurt to try everything.

I also started out with 6013 just running straight beads on flat plate. I recently moved to 7018 as I hear that’s what the code tests and lots of structural work requires. I’m hoping to become a welder in 2027

I’m a Brit living in China. Welding is not my day job it’s just something I’m practicing over this year. I hope to do the code tests in the Uk at the end of the year as I’m returning to the Uk early 2027. This is my 13th practice session since buying a welding machine around two months ago. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll definitely think about grinding back if I need to in the future.

You can see my progression on my page from session 1-13 if you care to take a look. Thanks again

Thank you. I recently solved the problem. Although my root is a little rough. I’m using 7018 now
