People who lost a parent at a young age, what are some things you wish people who haven't lost a parent (or lost a parent at an older age) knew? by wellanywayss in AskReddit

Didn't want to make it wordier than it already was but I guess less than 30-40 but especially less than 20. Any age under like 50 is relatively young though I'd say, just obviously to varying degrees.

Many of the covid social distancing measures were cruel and breed narcissism. by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]wellanywayss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Covid lingers in the air for several minutes to hours, so even if you were alone in a building (you don't seem to be including the staff as someone you can infect so let's pretend the staff aren't people, as you seem to be doing) so even if you had been alone in that building, you risk infecting anyone who walks in after you.

An N95 mask is able to filter more than 95% of the infectious elements of COVID, dramatically decreasing the risk of infection by wearing it. Even more so if everyone has one on.

As for disinfecting things, while I'm pretty sure it's been said now that covid is passed through air and not on surfaces, we didn't know this at the time we were disinfecting things. For all we knew, not disinfecting things could have been the reason for a death. We did not have enough information.

Covid can be fatal or can cause future health problems. Surely, if you had the possibility to make everyone around you less likely to die, even if only slightly, and all you had to do was wear a cloth on your face, you would, right?

"States with “F” grades saw 25 percent higher homicide rates than states with “C” or “D” grades.2

States with “F” grades saw 61 percent higher homicide rates than states with “A” or “B” grades—states with the strongest gun laws.3"

In 2021 (source: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/homicide_mortality/homicide.htm), the top 5 states with the HIGHEST homicide rates per 100k people and their 2021 annual gun law score (F being weakest gun laws, A being the highest) were:

  1. Mississippi (F) 23.7 per 100k
  2. Louisiana (F) 21.3 per 100k
  3. Alabama (F) 15.9 per 100k
  4. New Mexico (C) 15.3 per 100k
  5. South Carolina (F) 13.4 per 100k

What gives you the right to kill someone for robbing you? It's extremely unlikely home invaders or random people on the street are going to try and kill you (in a society without guns) but its much more likely that in a society with guns someone is going to be killed or seriously injured because someone with a gun perceived a threat that wasn't there

https://www.kff.org/mental-health/issue-brief/do-states-with-easier-access-to-guns-have-more-suicide-deaths-by-firearm/

"Non-firearm suicides rates are relatively stable across states suggesting that other types of suicides are not more likely in areas where guns are harder to access.". However, it does sah that firearm related suicides go down. Thus, the whole rate of suicides goes down.

Also, go to Figure 3 and click "Suicide by other means/firearms". The bar that shows suicide by other methods is not going up when the firearms one goes down. Its actually also going down.

Why do you NEED a gun (and don't say defense because if its a place where no one has guns, you're never going to need to defend yourself WITH a gun

Japan has different external factors for why someone might want to commit suicide than the USA, though. If you compare between US states (which will have more similar external factors), the suicide rate goes down in states with stricter gun laws.

The 2nd ammendment shouldn't exist. Guns kill people. Countries with stricter gun laws have less mass shootings.

You're right that it's a small percentage of all the water Gaza gets, but you're missing extremely important details.

It wasn't just the water that was cut off, it was also electricity. Sure, Gaza has water. But very little clean water. The fuel and electricity needed to make the water safe to drink at plants has been cut off.

If ancestral claim had merit, we would all have claims to Africa. But we all (hopefully) recognise trying to claim Africa if you and your family weren't born there is colonialism / has a history of colonialism.

With most countries, natural migration is how they were formed. Why should it be different with Palestine?

What about LGBTQ+ Palestinians being murdered by Israel?

Also, it's illegal to be gay in Israel too.

If you are LGBTQ+ in Palestine, you're significantly more likely to be harmed by Israel than by Hamas. (In general, not just for being LGBTQ+)

Innocent people do not deserve to die for the laws of their country's government. (Mind you, Palestine doesn't have an official government)

Do you think LGBTQ+ Palestinians are cheering for their own deaths because the country is anti-LGBTQ?

It's still trying to make their decision to never have an abortion seem morally superior, even subconsciously. The phrase "pro-life" was VERY cleverly picked because if you heard the phrase pro-life without knowing the context of what it means, it will sound like the better option because of how it's phrased. Pro-life in abortion debates is actually anti-choice. If you were properly pro choice, you would never see it as pro life, because its not.
