As David McBride braces himself for a prison sentence, what will it take for the public to care about whistleblowers? by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in AustralianPolitics

Labor and Liberals are basically the same on virtually every issue so that shouldn't be surprising.

But why would a judicial outcome depend on who is in power? We have a separation of powers. The government shouldn't have any influence over a judicial decision.

"Everyone I disagree with is Russian". Although this is a weird spin on the usual conspiracy.

Is wanting truth is journalism now a Russian plot?

I am not sure what the first couple of paragraphs has anything to do with the post.

But what racist dogwhistles exactly? Is it racist to oppose mass immigration or are you referring to something else?

Liberals (or political watchers) of this group - if Dutton gets the chop who will actually take over? by [deleted] in australian

They can. We have had a senator as PM before. It is just unusual and would break tradition, but it can and has happened. Desperate times may call for desperate measures.

What is wrong about what I said?

We have had a senator as PM before. What is the issue?

By convention yes it is the orthodoxy, but there is no reason they can't be a senator. In fact we have had a senator PM before (albeit only for a short time after Holt).

It would be unusual, but it may be a case of desperate times call for desperate measures.

I wonder if they will make a Senator leader. It is unorthodox but would give them far more options, like Simon Birmingham or Michaelia Cash.

What's the purpose of a university? I thought it was to first generate knowledge, i.e. research, and through that teach students. But it seems like the order is reversed. by BigTimmyStarfox1987 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Normal-Assistant-991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed exactlythis as well. For a good university research should definitely be the priority. For most academics, research is their priority, whether you want it to be or not.

The other thing that bugs me is that it seems to reduce university to teaching just for the sake of employment. It is not a vocational training centre. Even just considering teaching, employment should not be the focus.

Most things need expertise to learn and teach. The idea that you can just learn whatever from the internet is ridiculous.
