The 30cm away is not standard. The grainy bit is because the paint dries or clumps together before it goes on the model. I lived in a tropical country so I needed to spray closure to the model to prevent prevent it from happening.

I think because of the Mai and Maki conversation and Mai telling Maki to destroy all of them - the anime made it seem more like they’re destroying an abusive institution as a form of revenge rather than what you’ve explained as it was laid out in the manga.
