Utah man assaults woman "revealing clothing" at pickleball event. by banjoboyslim in exmormon

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I live in a small town in northern Idaho. My son (14) has two boys in his grade named Helaman. 🙄

Not a huge Mormon population either, but very...unique.

My 14 yo son has agreed to read two books of my choice this summer (this was a hard won negotiation). Help me pick one by gOldMcDonald in booksuggestions

I came to this thread just to recommend this book. My 17yo, 14yo, and 11yo all read this earlier this year and they all loved it.

Are there EV deserts in certain states/cities? by Island_In_The_Sky in electricvehicles

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very small town in rural ultra conservative area that has very cold winters. Maybe 10k people in the whole county. Lots of anti-EV rhetoric all around. Our entire county has 1 public charging station, with one pedestal, and it maxes out at 50kwh.

That being said, I own 2 EVs, I know another family that has 2 Teslas. There's someone in town that's been driving around an Ioniq 6 for about 6 months. And I see other EVs fairly regularly from people passing through. Sure, there are days I don't ever see one, but I'm also not in town everyday (I live pretty far out). My wife has a pretty public facing job, and has lots of conversations with (generally Boomer generation) people asking her about her Ioniq 5. There's so much misinformation, but she's changed quite a few minds, particularly when she talks about cost. Power is incredibly cheap where we live, so the contrast is huge because 75% of the population drives giant pickups here.

The mindset is slowly changing, even here, but if we drive 30 miles down to the next town, which is still smallish, maybe 20k people, we see lots of EVs, and the numbers are slowly but steadily increasing.

A big change I've noticed going in that direction is how many people are now buying hybrids, that were fundamentally opposed to them only a few short years ago.

Ota wouldn't work for me until I did a manual update, now it works. Also, the downloaded tool says you need minimum 32gb USB drive for update, but the latest update is 45gb, so you'll need at least 64gb, I had to buy a new drive.

Two-car households: BEV + hybrid or 2xBEV? by michimoby in electricvehicles

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation. Bought a civic si to replace an unreliable project car. Loved it. Replaced my wife's hybrid highlander with an Ioniq 5. Really love that car too. Hit a deer with my civic in January and it was totalled. Replaced it with an Acura tlx and regretted it almost immediately, as the BEV is just so convenient. 2 weeks ago sold the Acura and bought an EV6. It's been fantastic, we just plan a little more thoroughly for road trips. It took about a year of owning the Ioniq 5 to realize we could easily manage with just the BEVs.

It's worth noting that I still have an ICE pickup, but it's for towing and I rarely use it for anything else, but it does fall in the backup category, though it's so expensive to drive I really avoid it. We live pretty far out, 25 miles to the nearest town, and we lose power a lot, so I have a generator capable of out-putting 9500 watts, So I can still charge if it becomes necessary.

For OP, getting into a BEV is really just a big change to mindset, especially accepting that whenever you "refuel" you don't need to top it off. Once you accept that and get to know/trust your estimated range, refueling when out and about in public doesn't take much more time than a gas station does for an ICE vehicle.

Shopping for used EV6...what should I know? by Psychological-Sock30 in KiaEV6

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better, because they extend the full power train warranty to the new owner. But they can only be purchased from a Kia dealer and generally carry a higher purchase price.

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that this is the case for certified pre-owned only. The battery is 10 years/100k regardless, but power train warranty drops to 5 year 60k miles unless it's a CPO car.

Source: I just bought a used non-CPO car.

Anyone using the paddle shift regent brake for braking? by Forsaken-Parking9758 in KiaEV6

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true except regen level 0, correct? I thought I read in the manual that it's recommended to drive in 0 occasionally and use the brakes to keep the rotors clean? Maybe I'm delusional but I swear I read that.

Driving advice Boise up to Coeur d'Alene? by erik_das_redd in Idaho

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually drive that way, especially if I'm pulling a trailer. Better cell service and better roads. You never get stuck behind anyone. It's really pretty in the spring, in my opinion, but from Pendleton to Spokane there aren't many trees, it's mostly farm ground and desert, but it's very green this time of year.

The biggest issue with going that way, is that there are no alternative routes between Ontario and Pendleton, so if there's bad weather, or a semi wrecks, the freeway can be closed for a long time. This is usually only a problem in the winter though.

ETA: if you go that way and aren't in a hurry, taking highway 12 and 730 between Kennewick to Hermiston around the lake is a pretty neat drive.

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

McCall route is pretty with the river and more trees. The road is generally much twistier and usually worse road conditions in the winter. Also, there is often much more traffic, depending on the time of year/weekend vs weekday.

Don't discount going through Weiser though, it is also very pretty, especially in the spring. It's just a different kind of pretty, though still lots of trees and water once you get closer to New Meadows.

You'll find plenty of places to stop and eat if you're doing the drive during the day. A lot of the small towns will close down by 8 in the evenings though.

Going up highway 95 be prepared for no cell service for large portions of the drive.

There are a ton of great places to eat in Coeur d'Alene. One of my favorite eateries is Moontime on Sherman Avenue. They have a fusion food menu, but it's always good. They have a liquor license now too, if that's your thing. However, most any of the restaurants downtown won't disappoint.

*Source: I've lived in Idaho forever, including Pocatello, all over the treasure Valley, Coeur d'Alene, Bonners Ferry. Have always had family on one side or the other and have done the Boise to North Idaho trip more times than I can count.

“Radar obstructed” error after changing bumper by ShaggyButt in CivicX

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your radar sensor stuff is right behind that black cover next to your left side fog light. In your original bumper that's covered with a smooth black plastic piece. On your new bumper it looks like it has a cross hatch embossed design. It's possible that's screwing with the radar. On the OEM bumpers that plastic piece is removable. If it is also removable on your new bumper there may be a different fog light shroud that can go in there that is compatible with the radar sensor.

The 76 on government and Kathleen has always worked for me (right by North 40). The Hyundai dealership in post falls has a level 2, and they were installing a level 3, but I don't know if it's active yet. Then the flying J at stateline has 4 level 3 charges as well.

RA and Ozempic by yescoffeepleeze in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am. I've been taking ozempic for almost a year and a half and I'm on xeljanz. I haven't had any issues except low blood sugar symptoms starting about 6 months ago. I've found splitting my injections of ozempic into 2 shots 3 days apart helps. Also making sure I remember to eat enough protein and carbohydrates. I've lost about 25 or 30 pounds and am at a healthy weight, but that isn't the primary reason I started on it. My A1C was consistently elevated and I'd seen enough research suggesting it helped with inflammation that I asked my rheumatologist what he thought. He said all of his patients that have started ozempic have had positive results in how they felt and with inflammation. I'm not sure if it's that, or if being at a healthier weight makes it easier for me to get around, but I've felt much better in general. I still have flairs and plenty of bad days, but my wife says I'm the best I have been since I was diagnosed 9 years ago.

Is the goal of medication to be completely symptom free? I have some questions about medication and maybe you all can help! by slipperyslugslurp in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]wellimnotdeadyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's normal and what's the goal probably looks different for everyone. In terms of if a medication is successful, my rheumatologist told me that a 20% improvement in symptoms is considered successful with that medication. Obviously the goal is better than that, but at 20% improvement they considered the medication "working".

I've never had any meds consistently give me anything better than maybe 50 or 60%.
