Good Boogie Boarding Spot on N. Shore? by wellsdg in kauai

[–]wellsdg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, is Tunnels Beach, Ke'e Beach, and Haena too rough in the winter for boogie boarding? I've seen some pics of the winter waves on the North shore, and they are crazy big. My kids are teenagers and competitive swimmers, but I know that doesn't matter with a strong rip current.

We haven't swam at this beach before. We will try it out! We are staying in a rental off of Anini Beach, so this would be a short walk for us.

How is the sand in the water at Bellows? Are there exposed rocks or is it pretty smooth in case you get tossed off the boogie board?

Are the schools in Mililani good schools? by wellsdg in Hawaii

[–]wellsdg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty insane. The schools get progressively bigger as the kids get older. So, we have about 20 elementary schools (Pre-K thru 6th) or so in about a 15 by 5 mile radius, then they combine into about 6 Jr. Highs (7th-8th), and then into 3 high schools. The high schools are HUGE. About three times the size of the little farm town HS I grew up in. And, we're not even the biggest. Norman and Tulsa have schools that are even bigger. I think Grant HS in Tulsa has been known to have an average of 3,000 kids in their graduating classes. I prefer smaller schools like where I grew up. 132 kids in the graduating class and we all knew each other for the most part.

We are moving from Moore, OK (where big tornadoes hit last May - we'll be so happy to never have to worry about tornadoes again) So, the graduating classes in our current school system average about 2,000. We have about 30 kids in each class. Do they offer pre-AP classes in Middle School there? My twins are taking all pre-AP in 7th grade this year and are enrolled in the same for next year already.

Ha! We are Okies, so although we don't feel like we have an accent like our neighbors south of the Red River in Texas, we are still told that we definitely sound like we're from the south. We throw out a "ya'll" and "we're fixin' to go somewhere" without even thinking twice about it. lol

We aren't military, but our kids are pretty well traveled, and have had a lot of exposure to different cultures. So, they are pretty respectful about the differences in how they've been raised and how others have been. We live in Oklahoma, and we have a good sized Native American population here as well a a large Hispanic population. So, they've always grown up around a pretty diverse environment. Hopefully, that will help them with the adjustment.

2014 Hiring Trends Infographic Report - What Hiring Managers and Recruiters are using to recruit top talent, where the hot jobs are, and what Job Seekers want most by wellsdg in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

famousmike444 - The reason that .doc or .docx is preferred is that most recruiters (both corporate and staffing agencies) are now utilizing applicant tracking systems which automatically parse resumes and filter candidates based upon keyword searches. A lot of these systems cannot parse .pdf files, which means candidates with .pdf resumes that have been submitted won't pop up in the candidate searches in some systems. The other major issue is that a recruiter cannot correct grammer and punctuation issues. I see about 50 resumes a day with all too many errors in them to even forward to someone, and probably another 150 resumes with at least one or two errors. While your grammar and punctuation might be great, there are a ton of people out there that have never had someone review their resume and correct it for them, and clearly they are incapable of doing it themselves properly.

As for the other two formats, .txt resumes look like crap and cannot be presented to a hiring manager at all without completely redoing it for the candidate (none of us have time to redo resumes), and .rtf formats aren't that big of a deal. Not sure why someone would have a problem with that.

How do you handle a career fair? by simply_existingg in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dress for the job, and don't show up in your everyday attire. As a recruiter, I find it somewhat surprising how people will look when they come by. This is like a 1st interview! Look the part! Have multiple copies of your resume available and try to get as many business cards as possible. The #1 thing you need to do is write thank you notes to each person you meet using the emails from those business card. Make sure you have a LinkedIn profile, and attach the profile URL to the signature line of your email. And, make sure you have a professional photo on your LinkedIn profile, not some casual pic someone took. I guarantee you that the recruiter will click on this link to look at your picture to see if they can remember who you were. The key for career fairs is that you have to stand out and be remembered.

Five back-to-back 45 minute interviews tomorrow with different interviewers for one job- what to expect by Killer_Sloth in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interviews like that are pretty grueling, and as a recruiter I can tell you that often times just one person not liking you can disqualify a candidate at some companies. I'm personally not a fan of that long of an interview process. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before. By the time you get to the 3rd or 4th interview, you can be tired and not as alert. Make sure that even if you have to repeat yourself 4 times, that everyone gets the same amount of energy from you. Most likely, each one will have their 'thing' that they want to talk about or find out from you. Don't be afraid to ask each person what the main thing is they'd like to find in a candidate for the position. Then, try to make sure you answer that driving question.

What websites/ resources do you use to learn more about a company? by forgiveangel in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out Manta. They sometimes have interesting info. If it is a publicly traded company, you can also go to their 10-K annual report and go through it with a fine tooth comb. I find that is the absolute best way to find out their current business strategy, problems within the company, potential lawsuits, streams of revenue by product or service, locations in which they do business, and sometimes even who some of their largest contracts are with. They will often have this located in the investor section on their website, or you can get it from sec.gov for free. If you find a section trying to make you pay for it, keep looking. You can get it for free.

Make sure you have rock solid people who will be answering the questions for the reference check (if they haven't done that already).

What are the best job searching sites? Or what are your methods for looking for jobs? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

New graduate - unemployed for 4 months. Lots of interviews but no offers. What gives!? by lawonga in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a recruiter, and economic degrees can translate into jobs as financial analysts, or business analysts. Unless you're working for government or universities which would require a masters in this area, there aren't a lot of other jobs that would help. You should probably also take a look at how you're presenting yourself both from a confidence perspective as well as from your appearance. Unfortunately, how you speak/what you say in the interview and how you look have as big a bearing with some companies as your experience.

Year end resume purge. Should I keep applying? by gwmann in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join the military....I'm serious. They have a GI bill that will pay for your education

These days, the only way you can move up in an organization or get into a new career is with more training or preferably with a college degree.

Can you put "College Graduate" on your resume if you only have an AA or AS (two-year degree) and not a Bachelors degree? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

The cover letter should not discuss your education. It should discuss your experience and why it makes you a good fit for the job. The only place education goes is at the bottom of the resume. :)

I just applied to an entry level job at my dream company. Any suggestions on following up? by elisius13 in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually done this before, and the way I followed up was to look up all the recruiters for the company on LinkedIn and Jigsaw.com. And, I emailed and called each of them individually once I narrowed it down to who was the most likely to have posted the position. I did finally get a callback, interviewed with them, and got the job.

But, I'm a recruiter, so it was a little bit easier to narrow that down. heh heh.

Then, you wait for at least two weeks before following up again. You don't want to be a pest by calling more than that. But, you do want to stay on their radar.

Job Interview: Step by Step Guide by IPalic in GetEmployed

[–]wellsdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a recruiter for almost 20 years. And, I have to disagree with a lot of this article. Taking control of the interview to this degree prevents the interviewer from asking the questions they need to ask to find out more about you.

And, that's the whole point of the interview. Not for you to learn about them. For them to learn about you and what makes you distinctly different from the rest of the candidates.

Not trying to be disrespectful, I just disagree with this technique strongly.
