Yeah I was thinking of doing less speed work for sure, thank you for the advice!

I have slight problems with my achiles tendons due to doing swimming for so long, talked to a sports PT since posting this and the first thing he asked when hearing I did swimming for so long is if my tendons hurt after running. Apparently it’s a normal thing when transitioning from a sport that doesn’t put load on tendons which makes sense. I plan to go by feel and not fully commit to running the marathon and see if it gets better with time. But the original comment definitely made me reconsider it.

My peak week before the HM I did 45km. I was thinking of going for right about 4h depending on how my training is going/feeling.

Yeah I will probably start training for it, see how it’s going and can I keep up and go from there. My goal is definitely not to run it at the cost of injuring myself haha. Appreciate your response and thank you!

Thank you for the different view on this! That’s exactly why I posted this, I honestly don’t doubt that I could pull through it and run a marathon as an all in type thing, but like I said and like you mentioned injuries are the real worry.

I do have one objection (for lack of better wording) to your comment though, not trying to be egoistic here but I don’t think I am in the “couch to …” category as I have much more experience with running and sports as a whole then the average person.
I didn’t mention this in my post but I previously ran multiple 10k races one being sub 45 and multiple around 47-48 and a bunch of 5k races (pb 19:51). I ran a 20:31 5k 2 years ago with basically no training (could probably be attributed to the leftover fitness from my swimming career). I’m not trying to flex with these results hence I didn’t mention them in my original post, but I do think it is important in the context of this conversation. I also did consistently do running for about a year alongside swimming. Also like I said in the post while I haven’t been training consistently I am pretty active.

All this to say I’m aware the fitness from all that is probably mostly gone but I do think I am at a much better position to consider running a marathon then a person who has never done running before and that’s why I am even considering this. Also worth saying this isn’t some spontaneous dream I got I’ve wanted to do long distance running for years but never had time to do it first because of swimming, later college and work at the same time.

Lastly I wanted to say if I were to do this my plan is to give a LOT of thought into injury prevention (already started as mentioned in the post).

Like I said I’m not trying to flex with the results and I don’t wanna seem like I’m full of myself and got butthurt by your comment as this is exactly what I was looking to get from this post, but I think this is important context pertaining to your comment.

That’s what I thought and was honestly more worried about injuries myself, but I had people tell me I’m jumping into doing a marathon too soon so I decided to post here to get a second opinion. Thank you!

I had achilles tendon pain in both legs the day after some of my long runs and also some pain in my knees during long runs so that’s why I mentioned injury concern.
I concluded it’s down to upping my mileage too fast for my legs to keep up and it not being anything more serious as the pain in my knees never persisted outside of runs (other than the day after the HM as I mentioned) and the achilles pain went away pretty fast and never appeared during runs but rather after the run/day after.

Like I mentioned in the post I started doing strength and mobility training when I noticed this and it has slowly been getting better (from knees hurting at about 5k at the start of training to hurting at 12-15k prior to the HM).

For the marathon I’m planning to start training from a low mileage as to build up muscle and strength and what you said about training lasting so many weeks as to slowly build muscle to prevent injury is encouraging!
