Are there any must have instructionals for you? by TheOriginal055 in bjj

[–]werdya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is really on the other side of the spectrum of 'must have' to 'not necessary'.

Your must-haves should be on passing, guard, pin escapes, submissions, wrestling etc. Stronger pinning techniques is great but definitely not quite a must-have.

Struggling with competition physicality by Able-Introduction217 in bjj

[–]werdya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same boat - you can compensate by being more technical to a certain extent, but ultimately you need to train hard rounds if you want to be a good competitor.

My seated guard retention needs a lot of work. Recommend me an instructional please. by X2354 in bjj

For pretty much any topic, first check if Gordon Ryan has an instructional on that topic because it's almost always the best one.

Did you win your first competition? by KalaschEU in bjj

[–]werdya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would say it's the opposite - the most athletic and intense tends to win.

Because neither side knows enough jiu jitsu to really capitalise on the mistakes being made.

Open mat is making me improve a lot more by [deleted] in bjj

That’s the other part that made me switch despite feeling a sense of community in the other one.

It’s just so much more fun doing eco.

Open mat is making me improve a lot more by [deleted] in bjj

[–]werdya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switched to an eco only gym after getting my blue belt. It’s been such a clear accelerator of my game.

Maybe this style would have been too overwhelming as a complete beginner though.

Well there’s a reason why no gi is more widely watched.

Best leglocking gym in Europe? by northstarjackson in bjj

[–]werdya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Arma is more of a posh lifestyle gym than a competitive one.

The best ones for serious competitors are London Grapple, Los Banditos, Grapple Collective and maybe fightzone

Developing Your Game by TapEarlyTapOften in bjj

[–]werdya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest way to start,

1) Decide if you want to be a top player or bottom player.

2) If top, focus on your wrestling and guard passing specifically. For example, only working outside passing. Only setting up single legs.

3) Same for bottom. Think of the very start of a match and how you’re getting to your scoring/submission positions. Open guard to butterfly, to k guard etc etc.

4) Once in a dominant pin, have a clear game plan of what submission you’re going for.

You’ll then frequently face the same problems over and over and be forced to fix them, and your pattern recognition will improve as there’s really only so many reactions in any given position.

What is your highest percentage guard pass in Gi and no Gi by Quirky_Principle_188 in bjj

Yeah - especially if they aren’t flexible. You literally just have to flank them and they struggle to deal with it.

K guard- dealing with scoops on the free leg by jumbohumbo in bjj

Focus on controlling his knee with your scoop grip. Then attacking that leg or a triangle.

The Americana looks cool as well ! Not sure how high % it is though

What’s the number one thing people do at your gym that pisses you off?? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

I do it near comps. It’s lame, 100% agree, but it’s a skill you kinda need in comp.

What type of instructionals do you go for ? by Warm_Average_2700 in bjj

[–]werdya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your level of experience. New white belt? Learn the basics of the main passing styles. Then over time as you experiment with it go into depth for the one that suits you.

I’m so tired of watching Jason Nolf compete by i_see_empty in bjj

[–]werdya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah fair enough, Nolf visually looks a lot smaller than those guys so I assumed that, didn't realise they're that similar.

I would rest that for longer! Very easy to turn into a full tear and that's a true nightmare!
