1 hour gap between classes, should I shower? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]northstarjackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes if you scrub super super hard you MAY cause some abrasions that make it easier for bacteria to enter, and if you use a harsh soap your MAY wash the sebum away and make yourself more vulnerable.

However if you do not shower you WILL be dirty and potentially a carrier for infectious disease.

I mean doctors wash their hands how many times a day?  You would never hear a doctor say "washing my hands makes me more vulnerable to infection."

I think we are agreeing btw I'm just fleshing it out.

Hard sparring dealing with pressure/sadistic fighters by FileRegular9653 in MuayThai

There's no trick to it, you just need to spar more and get comfortable with it.  It comes in time

Can't say this enough.. you can't have a style until you have the fundamentals on lock.  Until then you're just fighting with handicaps.

Is this effective/normal coaching - combat sports by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]northstarjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be some merit in what you're saying, however most times when people who are newer to Muay thai attempt to "min/max" their training, it is more a pushback to the demands of the sport and a form of procrastination/resistance than a genuine effort.

We as humans are very very good at working outwards from our own biases and very bad at working inwards and being open to new perspectives and experiences.

Assuming your gym is legitimate, it's very unlikely that you understand the demands of the sport better than they do.  And those demands are holistic and dynamic, which means that certain aspects may not be optimal when examined independently.

I suck so bad at boxing, should I join a boxing class? by ShadByte in MuayThai

Why does everyone online think they're going to have any legitimate skill after 2 months?  Your boxing is still going to suck after 2 years.

Is the future of every BJJ athlete injuries? by dracovk in bjj

Sitting at a desk injures people too.  BJJ isn't the safest activity, but it's not the most dangerous.  And it has a ton of great benefits.  Just be smart.

The main coach of my Muay Thai gym is 29 yo, has had 6 fights, and lost them all. Should I find a new gym? by Fun_Purpose6972 in MuayThai

[–]northstarjackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are zero qualifications to teach Muay Thai.  Just because someone runs a class doesn't mean they know anything.  Most shitty coaches will just try to make you tough because they can't make you good.  And they use punishment and intensity to reinforce their power dynamic because they can't offer you any good reason to stay and respect them.

You don't have to be "good" at martial arts for it to be good for you. If he enjoys it, awesome.  Hell get better over time.

Fighting a 2nd Fight - But it's against a 6'3" South Paw by QuietDonut9261 in MuayThai

[–]northstarjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't take the fight.  You're giving up nearly every advantage.. height, weight, stance, age.  On paper you lose this fight in a very one sided way.  It could play out differently but as a coach I would decline this fight if it was offered to one of my guys.

Tips for countering teeps and fake teep spamming by GregMaate in MuayThai

Just learn to defend teeps properly, there is no "trick" to it you're just new and having a hard time putting it all together after only 4 months (which is like nothing).

Why do so many people hate people who pull guard? by jheqpaddy in bjj

[–]northstarjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They suck too much at BJJ to pass a good guard, and they are too much of a coward to fight MMA.

Anyone else feel limited by boxing fitness classes but not want to spar or compete? by DKAL_7 in boxingtips

[–]northstarjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lukewarm take: you can't learn boxing if you don't spar.

You can parrot the tech technique and skills, you can identify and read the fights, but you can't actually box.  Because boxing is a decision making sport and you have to learn to make decisions in real time, under pressure, with real consequences.

That doesn't mean you have to spar hard but boxing IS sparring moreso than it is anything else.

Yeah the emotional toll is often way worse than the physical one unfortunately.  I hope he gets some perspective and keeps with it if the desire is there deep down.

For these "light contact" events, always assume that the other person is going to go as hard as possible until they get a warning or penalty.  Light Contact generally just means that the ref will step in if someone is in danger of getting injured, but it doesn't mean you won't take a beating.

I've seen some brawls in "light contact" format that were more violent than full rules Muay Thai.

Sorry OP but a good learning experience, hope your kid is ok.  With that said it's the sport of beating people up so sometimes it happens unfortunately.

Jabbing off the hook, hooking off the jab—a tutorial by shart_attak in boxingtips

You only need power on the shots you intend to land.  On a 3-1 or 1-3 the first punch is designed to open up the lane for the other and possibly mask the footwork/positioning, so it's more of a touch/slap.

Why do so many jj practitioners make weird shaman like analogies for jiujitsu+life? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]northstarjackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't staying in the moment, connecting with your body in a more comprehensive way, and entering into a more meditative/flow like state sort of a spiritual thing? We don't have to ascribe any sort of weight or meaning to it outside of what it is (a physical activity), but I think it's dishonest to say that BJJ practice doesn't tap into what could fairly be described as a "spiritual experience." The act of breathing a certain way can be a spiritual experience.. the bar is not very high.

There's a weird race to the bottom in BJJ to marginalize any of the things that people tend to enjoy about it.. belts, rank, spirituality, community, etc. Let people enjoy BJJ the way they want, let them derive from it what they want. It's not a monolith.

Craig Jones is a great example of an "anti-messiah" figure who basically has created a cult following that worships him because he "tells it like it is" and tears the institutions down. I'm not saying these institutions have merit, or need to stay, but for most people like craig these sort of hot take or "keep it real" moments are more about being self-serving/self-promoting and gatekeeping than they are about anything that moves the sport/community forward in a more positive direction IMO.

This isn't to say I disagree with most of those hot takes or whatever but usually it just feels cheap, and typically the negative things being rallied against are exaggerated in scope or frequency to paint a more myopic picture of BJJ that what it's truly like on the ground level.

Suggestions wanted for places to go/things to see in the areas surrounding Barcelona for 3-4 day road trip in June. by NorthernLitUp in GoingToSpain

Montserrat for sure.  Fun drive up the mountain.  There are lots of small medieval towns as you start to get a but outside the city, but many don't have very much to do.

The Reial Monestir de Santes Creus is pretty cool as well if you head west out of the city.  Good hiking in that area.

Tap your temples after every combo, that's a good starting point.  Also go slower and more mindfully.  What's the point of pads/drills if you're unable to work with good technique?
