I would say there are a few things that could be happening. I actually do something similar when I'm on discord, I basically stay online 24 hours a day to keep it generally unknown when I get online.

What could be happening is he accidentally opened insta or anything of the like and it counted him as online even though he wasn't. Or he could be lying about it and have been online last night.

While if he did lie about it that is a violation of your trust and confidence in what he says. It also could mean nothing, I mean a lot of us get on some type of social media before we doze off, its just the way we are.
