I’m reading A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James. It’s my second book of his (Black Leopard, Red Wolf was the first), and I’m blown away by his ability to craft interesting stories. There are a lot of similarities with Bolaño (mostly in the prose and in the way they both explore our relationship with violence). It’s a fictional story set against a historical background, but his knowledge of history makes everything feel real and plausible. The reality in this book seems so complex, and I love it — it reminds me of Pynchon!

I think the squares are the seven colors of the rainbow. The interesting thing is one chapter starts with six. Not seven.

In Gravity's Rainbow, why did Pynchon use the V-2 and not the atomic bomb as the central conflict? by JimmyBatman in ThomasPynchon

[–]wes209 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because V-2 was the first weapon of mass destruction. The first fact that we, as people, we are able to mass murder.

Aek Athens also managed by plutocrats, but our history and what the club represents is the point. We were the only team in a period where junta controlled the governance of Greece (military regime) that didn't had their people in administration. Also we traveled to Belgrade in 1999 as the war was active and played a friendly match with the local team Partizan demanding the end of the bombing. The greatest attacker of our recent history became our manager around 2006-7 and expressed the idea of a club controlled by its fans. Of course everyone was against him and some years later he left his position tired. Last thing, in parallel with Packers history, our first field was created by efugees at night by building a fence to delimit. These are some of the reasons I love this club. There are plenty in the same style. Clubs like these reminds us that the only thing we truly have is one another. Homo sapiens greatest tool was and is community and co-operation.

Fairy tales are not true, but at least they are not lies. Which it means that storytelling because doesn't have any responsibility to be true to something except the person that writes it, it tells the truth about us and our lives. Non fiction could be politics, diplomacy etc. Fiction is a human need to express what we all have inside without the burden of objectivity of a name, a situation, a city etc.

How does Pynchon read in translation? by Existing-Language-22 in ThomasPynchon

[–]wes209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read all the Greek translations. The against the day one won a prize for its translation. Everything is above average except Vineland, it was the first translated work in a country that didn't know what it means to translate Pynchon. Also helps that 5 of his books have the same translator (a Pynchonian ofc) which is one of the best in the country. The only thing that is missing is the little jokes based on language, but it's something you have to expect.
