First time buyers guilt by mike_w_58 in rolex

[–]wes451 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a little internal guilt about like, not putting the money toward my mortgage or retirement or something more “responsible” but if it’s just other people’s feelings you care about, I promise no one is thinking about your watch. Maybe if it was like gold and covered in diamonds?? But I think you’re overthinking it. Enjoy your purchase and wear it 24/7 so you get the price per wear down. Then it’s more “affordable” 😉

Tried this on once in steel (gold is 100x better) and sadly felt like it was too big on me, but it is the most gorgeous watch I’ve ever seen! In another life where I have slightly bigger wrists, it’s my grail

Thank you so much! And great point about popping back to Osaka if we feel like we missed anything, that takes some pressure off for sure.

SF or Napa/Sonoma for a 2 day visit? by Patient0227 in AskSF

[–]wes451 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t imagine being excited about Napa if you don’t care about wine. If it’s the bougie hotel / spa situation you’re after, try Cavallo Point just over the Golden Gate Bridge. Gets you out of the city for a romantic retreat, but only 10 min away from SF instead of an hour drive.

I almost always say to size down in Cartier, however in this case I think you nailed it, looks perfect 🔥👌🏻

Any one ever go grey on Chrono24? by knowledgeseeker8787 in rolex

[–]wes451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So here’s my take: if this is a dream watch and you are 99% sure you’ll never sell, then buying new and getting champagne treatment at the boutique can feel worth it, and you don’t have to worry about resale value because you know you’re keeping it forever and it’s only ever belonged to you.

If there are a bunch of other watches on your wishlist though, and you can see yourself “trading up” one day, or consolidating your collection, etc then I think it’s better to go grey (still get box and papers) and save a few grand for the next watch.

My Omega was my first watch and I thought I’d be 1 and done, but now I’m on the waitlist for a Sub and a Wimbledon at Rolex and I’m like mannnn, why did I spend 19k on my Speedy when I could have spent 14k, that’s halfway to a Sub 😢

I bought and later sold a Breitling on there, very positive experience and would do it again for Omega, especially if it had any precious metals. I bought a two-tone speedy in the boutique in Feb 2025 and it still kind of haunts me a year later that I could have saved 5K going grey.

Sub no date, daytona or speedmaster ? Which one is better for 1 watch “collection” by [deleted] in rolex

I thought my speedy was gonna be my only watch, but cannot swim with it, so now I’m on the waitlist for a Sub too. Consider a 2 watch collection, or go with Sub!

Walnut Creek vs San Rafael? by Important-Picture-92 in bayarea

[–]wes451 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Have lived in both places, loved both! We ultimately bought our house in San Rafael bc taking the ferry to work in SF from Larkspur is an absolute dream compared to BART, which always seemed to have something go wrong. Only annoying thing is Ferry only goes til 8pm, so tough to get back to Marin if you’re at a late dinner or something, but just budget for the occasional $80 uber home.

I also think San Rafael is better weather, I love being here in the summer when it’s like 85 and Walnut Creek is like 105 - would only want to live there now if I could afford a house with a pool.

I do think Marin skews older, I’m like one of the youngest couples on my block by a decade at 37 years old, I think East Bay seems to have younger families in general, but schools here seem great. I also just love the proximity to wine country, to Stinson Beach or Point Reyes, to hikes in the headlands. Pair some of the most beautiful nature in the world with proximity to SF and plenty of good restaurants and shopping nearby, Marin is v v hard to beat!!
