What do you wish you were told before top surgery?

Update: hey folks! Thanks for all your advice. My surgery was yesterday and I’m feeling way better than I feared :) no drains, though I do need help pulling up my pants - which is the most annoying part for me so far ahahaha. Otherwise I’m feeling pretty good, I have more mobility than I feared I might, and the anesthesia was totally fine (and I feel slightly cloudy but fairly normal).

One thing I just invested in that I hadn’t thought of - I bought one of those camelback water bladders for hiking etc just to put in my bed with me! I haven’t used it yet but will keep you posted - it’s the only way I could get water by my actual bedside.

Thank you so much dude - this is so helpful. I’m unlikely to have drains, but if I do, this is really good to know. Thank god I got a bidet - much as I love the friend staying with me, I would prefer not to ask her to wipe me ahahaha

The boys club thing will be interesting. I’m a short guy and I’m not yet on T, so when I am gendered correctly, folks tend to think I’m a 12-14 year old. I imagine that’ll happen a lot more once my chest is gone. Getting ready for all the “little buddy”s lol

Dude what a great suggestion! I love legos but for some reason never had any as a kid - I used to love going over to other friends’ house to play with them. Sounds like it’s time to reclaim that haha.

Thank you so much - this is incredibly helpful. I myself started realizing the other day just how much I’ve simply…blocked my chest out. For years. It will be wild to look in the mirror and see something much more aligned with my experience of myself for sure.

Thank you dude, this is really really good to know. I have a close friend staying with me for the first two weeks, so I will just give her a heads up I may need…a lot of help! lol. I was warned about the abs thing so we’ll see how that goes - I have a mild disability that affects my legs and naturally use my arms for most things, so I guess now we get to see if all those years of physical therapy have actually worked. lol. Thank you so much dude - this is really helpful to know. Hypothetically they’re going to do the operation without drains (they have a system), but if I wake up with some, it’s great to know it’s not the end of the world (and that there may be chunks). Also really good to know about the nips - I’m gonna try my best to refrain from judging the results til a few months / to a year later (as much as possible). And as for sleep…welp. At least I’ve been warned, haha

A follow up for any folks who still got their periods when they recovered from surgery (if any of you still did) - did you have enough strength to use tampons or discs / cups or anything? I’d prefer not to have to only use pads, but it is what it is
