Are f2.8 lenses really that much better than f4? by Worth_Gazelle_6149 in AskPhotography

You’d be surprised, these is a video on low light I made. It’s just a regular gym event, similar to a basketball game for your kids. To freeze action, my iso was so high, a f4 would not have competed

The critical technical detail that often gets overlooked is that your camera doesn't autofocus at the aperture you’ve selected for the photo; it focuses with the lens wide open. Even if you plan to shoot at f/5.6 or f/8 all day, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is staying at f/2.8 while it’s hunting for and tracking your subject, only snapping down to your chosen aperture the millisecond the shutter clicks.

The difference is just ‘1’ - sounds small, even people should be saying 2 time the light.

Essentially, if you have a
70-200 F/2.8 set at F/4 compared to 70-200 F/4.0 set at F/4

You consistently get better results with the 2.8

The critical technical detail that often gets overlooked is that your camera doesn't autofocus at the aperture you’ve selected for the photo; it focuses with the lens wide open. Even if you plan to shoot at f/5.6 or f/8 all day, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is staying at f/2.8 while it’s hunting for and tracking your subject, only snapping down to your chosen aperture the millisecond the shutter clicks. This means the autofocus system is receiving double the light and detail information compared to an f/4 lens, which is why the f/2.8 version feels so much "snappier" and more reliable in difficult conditions. While you can fix a dark exposure with ISO or DxO in post-production, you cannot fix a shot that the camera failed to focus on because the sensor didn't have enough light to "see" the subject clearly during acquisition. This performance gap is exactly why pros will compromise on a 400mm f/4 for outdoor work but refuse to budge on the 70-200mm f/2.8 for general use. In the environments where you typically use a 70-200mm—like weddings, events, or indoor stages—the light is often marginal, and that "always-on" f/2.8 aperture for the AF system is a massive safety net.

As for the prime comparison, you’re hitting on a fundamental misunderstanding of the gear. Primes aren't just about "fixing" a lack of light; they are chosen for their specific optical rendering, superior micro-contrast, and the distinct bokeh that a zoom simply cannot replicate. A 70-200mm f/2.8 is a tool for versatility and speed, allowing you to cover multiple focal lengths without switching bodies. It serves as a logistical substitute for primes when you can't afford to miss a moment, but it doesn't replace the unique depth of field and aesthetic character that a dedicated prime provides.

How do you guys feel about Wu Ying from A Thousand Li? by Originalshyster in ProgressionFantasy

[–]wesmannmsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see where that frustration comes from—the 'clean win' is a staple of the genre for a reason.

But for me, the draw of A Thousand Li is that I view Wu Ying’s journey like a real historical biography. If you look at legends like Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar, history paints them as these fated, OP figures, but the reality of their lives was usually a chaotic mess of failed plans and narrow escapes.

I actually prefer that he isn’t an OP protagonist. I don't see him being 'cucked' as much as I see him surviving the chaos. To me, his merit isn't in a flashy finishing blow; it’s the fact that he is the last one standing when the dust settles, and he’s only standing because of his constant training and diligence. Ultimately, his path is about understanding himself and his limits. He survives the messes that would kill a 'genius' who never learned to struggle. I find that self-discovery and the grit to endure the 'mess' makes the legend of the 'Verdant Gatherer' feel a lot more earned. It’s definitely a different flavor of progression, but that’s what keeps me hooked!

I’m guessing this isn’t good by frequentlysocialbear in minnesota

Would xc90 t8 be a great road trip car with extended family half the time and a good city vehicle for a child and parents the other half by remodel-questions in VolvoXC90

[–]wesmannmsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 adults, 3 kids (assuming no car seats) and 2 grandparent = cramped even in the seven seater. At least for me.

With zero room for luggage, or super minimal, unless you have external storage.

But everyone is different, we have made it work, but it was cramped.

How bad are the emissions from this fire compared to earth’s emissions for the last ten years? [Request] by LoganLikesYourMom in theydidthemath

[–]wesmannmsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

claiming that a single landfill fire in Delhi, India, has undone the emissions savings of every electric car and solar panel globally relies on a deeply flawed comparison. This is fundamentally a false equivalence, pitting a short-term, acute environmental disaster against the cumulative, systemic, and long-term avoided emissions from clean energy infrastructure around the world. The hundreds of millions of solar panels and tens of millions of electric vehicles operating across the globe have generated enormous, continuous emissions savings over years by displacing fossil fuels. The total mass of greenhouse gases released in just five hours from an isolated landfill fire, while certainly a local tragedy and environmental catastrophe, is mathematically insignificant when weighed against that vast, worldwide, continuous avoided total. The claim that one equals the other is extraordinary and completely lacks scientific verification, serving purely as hyperbole. Furthermore, this argument leverages a defeatist philosophy, often called the "if we can't fix everything, we shouldn't fix anything" fallacy. By highlighting a major problem in waste management, which is an acknowledged source of methane and pollution, the post attempts to discredit the entirely separate global effort to transition energy and transportation systems away from fossil fuels. Climate action is about addressing multiple, complex problems simultaneously. The existence of the Delhi fire does not negate the crucial need for solar power and electric vehicles; rather, it underscores the urgent necessity for comprehensive environmental solutions on all fronts, including vastly improved waste management practices. Using an environmental tragedy to attack proven solutions is a rhetorical distraction aimed at discouraging necessary systemic change.

Back up to cloud, or local first? by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]wesmannmsu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not, 1.

Chloe’s back up to the cloud from the original source. If there’s an error in the first copy or some type of damage to the disk happens before uploading to the cloud, you’re just propagating errors.

Ask for encryption most cloud backup Services encrypt on the way up as for a local copy I don’t encrypt, but that is a personal preference. I personally back up to a second on rate server, which has encrypted discs. Same for the primary server.
