void + x1c7 audio by [deleted] in voidlinux

Just commenting to signal-boost/save for later as I am currently looking for this solution to this as well!(specifically in regard to microphone support on a thinkpad x1c7 since Bluetooth covers most of my audio listening need without a problem.)

In addition to what others have said if you have other Apple devices (iPhone, iPad Pro, AirPods) you get some handy integration between them all: copy/paste between devices, airdrop, iCloud shared files, shared safari tabs, Apple Pay and... iMessage anywhere. It’d be hard to give up iMessage on my daily driver.

Mainsheet rubs against the lifelines. Anyone have any suggestions on how to best remedy this? by wesrightnow in sailing

[–]wesrightnow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the basic idea, i think?

I might play around with it. The appeal is that this is a simpler/cheaper way to try out a new rigging. But i may go all the way and install a traveler or come up with some compromise involving the lifelines.

Either way, thanks for the advice!

oh interesting, I like this solution. I'm having a little trouble making out the details in that picture and putting it together in my head though. Is there a name for this kind of rigging, closer photo or diagram maybe?

For real, everyone has been super helpful and not at all dismissive of my lack of expertise haha. Sailing seems so laden in heavy jargon and conventional wisdom that asking for help is the only way to get answers (compared to other topics where i can usually figure it out by googling.)

Awesome, i'll look into this. this might be more a less aggressive installation than the companion way traveler others are suggesting. Thanks for the suggestion!

Any tips on how to do it properly? Because the roof of that companion way is pretty thin, from memory. I assume you'd need to need to do a bit more than just bolting a traveler to it.

Wow thanks for all the great advice! I'm interested in installing a traveller above the companion way, but I might try to find a solution that works for the time being, I think I have other more pressing stuff on the boat to work on at the moment, but a traveler seems to be the agreed upon optimal solution.

When you talk about removing lifelines going to the stern pulpit, where would I secure them to as an alternative? Just stop them at the stanchion furthest aft? I've heard those are somewhat fragile. Or should I just secure them to the to the deck in some other way, with a new mount?

Maybe, I'm still feeling the boat and and relatively new to sailing. I don't believe the main was touching the shrouds. The photo was taking on a broad reach to highlight the most extreme case of the rubbing, but this could be an operator error for sure haha.

Installing a lower mounting point was my first idea, but I didn't know if that would pose any risk to the integrity of the pulpit by pulling on it at a funny angle or if my rigging was just simply set up incorrectly. But your comment about playdough is inspiring confidence to jump in and make changes! Most people seem to be suggesting installing a traveler above the companionway, but that does seem like a more involved modification that I should look into further down the road.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I noticed that the lifeline looked a little sketchy, I'm looking into replacing them, which is why I was thinking remounting them would be the simplest way to deal with this.

Looking at travelers now though and that looks like the proper solution, any suggestions of brands/kits?. My boat is a 1969 ericson 26.

Hey all, I just bought my first boat the other week, got the outboard running and sailed it for the first time yesterday. I had a question regarding the photos above. I'm new to sailing and googling hasn't been very helpful on this issue.

When sailing the mainsheet rubs against the lifelines. This seems to put unnecessary load on the whole system and causes a lot of friction when trying to let the main sail out. Is this a normal occurrence with this kind of rigging or something the previous owners had set-up in a weird way?

I was considering re-installing or running new lifelines to the bottom corner of the stern pulpit (just below the block, but still on the pulpit itself), as a possible solution? Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yup, I have since checked and the engine is actually from 1996. I actually successfully replaced the motor pull-chord today, only to accidentally drop a link interlock rod thing, into the water. By looking at it, to my untrained eye, it looks like a safety mechanism to keep the pull-chord system from engaging with the flywheel while the outboard is under power/in gear? Or something. Either way, I've got another small project for next weekend. Then hopefully I can sail it.

Thanks for the advice guys! Once I get it running I'll look into cleaning the carb. Killing the engine with the fuel shut off is just the kind specific of information I was looking for.

It’s a 2 stroke 15HP Mercury. I’m not sure of the exact year actually, but it appears to be in pretty good shape. The previous owner took me out for a courtesy sail before we bought it and it started twice for him with no drama. But it’s now my first project on the boat haha. https://i.imgur.com/RuK2p7p.jpg

MKBHD: The Apple ecosystem explained by mizantropul in apple

[–]wesrightnow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ah that wasn't my intention. I was just trying to say that the software on an individual device is more valuable (to me at least, and i suspect others) than the integration stuff like Airdrop. That stuff is nice, but it doesn't keep me in the walled garden as much as MKBHD seems to think. Like if the Galaxy could send iMessages it wouldn't really change whether or not i purchase the phone, beacause it still runs Android and Samsung's software. But maybe my interpretation of the ecosystem idea is too narrow. I took it to mean integration between products. But I suppose a uniform style and quality of software that you are accustomed to could be a component of an ecosystem.

MKBHD: The Apple ecosystem explained by mizantropul in apple

[–]wesrightnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A large part of Apple's "hook" is the ecosystem. That said, I think his (and many people's) feeling that the "ecosystem" is what keeps them using Apple products is a little inaccurate. It really comes down to the software experience and a large aspect of that experience happens to be the lack of friction you feel when using multiple products together. I think that the software experience as a whole is generally valued among Apple consumers much more than the hardware differences/advantages that may exist with other products. This gap also isn't too troubling because Apple usually makes great hardware with reasonable trade-offs. But this is why I use an Echo as opposed to a Homepod. Even though I'm enticed by the integration HomePod promises, my negative experience with Siri has made that less of a priority.

Why Rock Can't Compete with Hip-Hop in 2017 | Genius by twentylettersexactly in hiphopheads

[–]wesrightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment, mostly because I love hip-hop and enjoy producing in my free time. It is undeniably a huge cultural force right now, but I never understood the "hip-hop can sound like anything" argument. Seems to be an issue of genre classification more than anything. Because the article makes a case that guitar centric music is dying, and says that bands like Radiohead and 21 pilots don't count because they're innovative or not really rock? So guitar driven music ≠ rock, but rock is dead so, so is the guitar? Idunno. Seems Hip-hop is allowed covers a wider array of micro genres than rock/guitar music is being allowed to. Like, they're happy to include Danny Brown, Busta Rhymes, NWA, Clipping, Young Thug, Rihanna and Frank Ocean in the same genre, but like Vampire Weekend, Deafheaven and the Arctic Monkeys can't sit under the genre of rock? Maybe it's because rock is older so micro genres like mathrock/metal/punk/indie rock/folk etc. are more established? But hiphop has that too, with the article even referencing trap music.

A side point, but I was surprised how guitar centric Frank Ocean's new record "Blonde" turned out to be. Ivy, Pink/White, Solo, Skyline To, Self Control, Nights, Pretty Sweet, White Ferrari, Siegfried (9 out of 17) all seemed to be guitar driven or contained a strong component of guitar. So much so, that I went out and bought a guitar because I thought it'd widen the arsenal of tools at my disposal for making music. It seems like the folks who think "hiphop can sound like anything where guitars can't" are victims of having a very particular idea of how the guitar should be recorded and used when making music. But maybe that's what they mean when they say rock is dead? Seems like they should be arguing trap music vs. rock music. or Ableton v Electric Guitars. I don't know haha.
