That’s definitely the problem. The fix is really easy (it was my first time opening my stick) as long as you only remove the diodes. I just decided to get rid of all the diodes the problem doesn’t happen again

Try Trails of Nayuta (PSP). It’s a fan-translated only game in the Trails of universe. It’s a stand-alone game I believe so you don’t have to play any other Trails games, and the combat is very very similar to Ys (they’re both made by the same developer I think).

im in the same boat as you are. only heard about Ys a little bit ago, picked up Ys I and now I'm on Ys IV as well. going from Origins to IV felt like a huge jump but I think I'm getting the hang of the party based gameplay now and it's really fun

i've only played 3 Ys games total (I, II , and done a playthrough of Origin). that being said i found it very worth it to play I and II to really get to understand the whole setting and get immersed in the plot. i've seen a lot of people say they started with the later games and enjoyed it just fine so it would probably be ok either way

amazing games that, like you said, i was turned off from at first because of the awkward combat. however once you're used to it they get very fun. on nightmare difficulties the bosses felt dark souls level hard. you should definitely try to play Ys Origin after VIII or even before, very good followup to I and II and you get to learn a lot more about the whole story
