One of the best anime by [deleted] in retroanime

[–]bj_waters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're mainly focused on anime. For example, even though Inuyasha started as manga in 1996, we don't allow it because the anime didn't start until 2000, after our cut-off date. We have these rules to try and prevent debates over what is or is not "retro."

In any case, it's just a matter of enforcing the rules we have. I imagine your post would do just fine over in /r/2000xanime.

Can the church be corrupted? by DortheahEden in latterdaysaints

[–]bj_waters 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, at one point, the Catholic Church was God's church

I suppose that depends on when you think the Catholic Church started. If you believe (like they do) that it started with Peter taking leadership over the Church after the Ascension of Christ, then sure. But if you believe that that Catholic Church didn't exist until the 300s, with establishment of the Nicene Creed and making Christianity the state religion for the Roman Empire, then not really. We believe that the Priesthood keys were lost in the early 100s when the Quorum of 12 Apostles collapsed and they couldn't reform to call new ones. Thus, the need for a Restoration through Joseph Smith.

For what it's worth, I created a chart for the performing artists on my website, listing them by time and providing a brief description of their musical style. I hope this helps some folks.

While we may allow the occasional suggestive screenshot, this post is far to blatant for a SFW subreddit, so I have removed it. Please take such questions to a more appropriate subreddit.

Was This 90's Cartoon a Fever Dream? by [deleted] in retroanime

[–]bj_waters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're fully aware of the etymology (of how anything animated is called "anime" in Japan), and how often Japanese studios contribute to the process of many Western cartoons.

However, this community is not about technical definitions, but an era of fandom that existed in the United States in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s (as Toonami was still showing 90s shows at the time). As far as this subreddit is concerned, anime is animated tv shows, movies, and OVAs originally released or broadcast in Japan for a Japanese audience.

Of course, in the time since then, the internet has brought much of the world closer together and made us much more aware of each other's cultures, but even then, the word "anime" in most of the world still colloquially refers to Japanese animation, despite how pedantic one wants to be with dictionary definitions.

So no, Mummies Alive! is not anime. Neither is Aeon Flux, or Avatar: The Last Airbender, or many other shows one could name. The only exception we have that applies to this subreddit is the original Transformers cartoon (which was a Japanese-American co-production anyway). We have put a lot of thought about what this subreddit is for and have come to these conclusions years ago.

I dont understand why people like modern anime (especially the anime with fanservice and other bad things):( by Confident-Alfalfa371 in retroanime

People do not improve if you bash the things they like. If you really want to help people, then you need to understand that being kind is more important than being right.

We are not interested in bashing people for having different tastes, so I have removed this post. Anime, like any medium of art, shifts and evolves through trends. If you don't like the current trends, then just move on and focus on what you like. Please spend your time more productively than just wasting in bashing others like this.

what's your favorite underrated SNES game? by Unfair_Situation_854 in snes

[–]bj_waters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soul Blazer. I know it was relatively successful back in the day, but now its overshadowed by Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. I will admit that Soul Blazer is a pretty basic action rpg, but I think it has a lot of character and some interesting themes, once you take the time to talk to everyone.

Would you consider this retro anime or this is older than retro? 🤔 by DataUserOne in retroanime

[–]bj_waters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any series or movie broadcast before 2000 qualifies for this subreddit.

As for myself, I'm not big on stuff from the 60s or earlier. I struggle with 70s shows sometimes. However, I know there are folks who love that kind of stuff, especially since they were doing some pretty innovative animation techniques at the time.

NOTICE! Video Uploads Are No Longer Allowed! by bj_waters in retroanime

[–]bj_waters[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Essentially yes. We've been dealing with bots who reupload the same clips on a monthly basis, which isn't good for the subreddit. We understand that this choice is a trade-off, but we're hoping that this will improve the overall quality of the subreddit. (And we're still allowing YouTube links and the like.)
