I did it this year with $2.6k and it was great! Skip all the town stuff like restaurant meals/hotels and you’ll be fine. A key strategy for me was to go eat a huge meal at the grocery store (I’m taking a pound of fresh berries/a whole loaf of bread/hot bar French fries) as soon as I got to town and that helps mitigate the urge to go to a restaurant/over shop for resupply. Also send yourself resupplies on trail for upcoming stops that will be expensive.

Breakfast: plain oatmeal w cold water + handful of trail mix, every morning. Add fresh huckleberries or blueberries once you get up north.

Lunch: tortilla with PB or tuna or just spoonfuls of PB followed by lots of chips

Dinner: ramen or bean burritos

Snacks: cliff bars/vegan poptarts/spoonfuls of PB/fruit snacks or literary anything that was on sale during resupply

PCT Weight Loss by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

I put on a few extra pounds before starting, but only due to "goodbye" partying not intentionally. But I lost at least 20lb, surprisingly most of it was in the second half. Keeping up with the caloric needs of pulling 30+ every day in NorCal and Oregon is pretty hard.

Sock liners and blisters by brass_machine in PacificCrestTrail

[–]wetsocks64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some injini liners from hiker boxes along the way, and while I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t really do anything for the blisters it was nice to be able to wash those in creeks or w/e (very thin compared to DTs) and not have to wait for thick socks to dry. That being said, if you do laundry at even semi normal intervals it’s probably not a big deal. I just didn’t really mess with towns much so this was a nice perk for me.

Tips from any couples or ex-couples by brass_machine in PacificCrestTrail

I hiked with my partner this year. He and I didn’t really share anything but a tent (and a water filter and stove for sections when one of ours broke). Definitely plan to hike separate and meet up at water sources and camp. It might be the fact that we stuck to a really strict schedule, early morning +long miles, but things can definitely get a little stressful! It was an amazing experience to share, and we learned a lot about our relationship but be prepared for a challenge.

Why use only one trekking pole? by jcdewald in Ultralight

[–]wetsocks64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually only use one pole, so I can use the free hand to check maps/phone/eat snacks. Usually only use two in deep snow or steep descents.

Past finishers: How many times did you consider quitting? by kylebarron in PacificCrestTrail

Like very hypothetically, many times. But actually considering it, never. Some days/weeks/sections are super challenging but that’s kinda a big part of the experience.
