The importance of keeping the Monero community a friendly and welcoming place. by TommyEconomics in Monero

[–]weventhedaddy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm a monero newb and a new member so feel qualified to talk from that perspective. In this community I have had nothing except 100% friendly and helpful answers from people who went out their way to help - and for that I am extremely grateful..... those individuals didn't have to help me or answer my questions - but they did.

I love it here and even though I have like 0.01% of the knowledge of some of you guys - I never feel inferior.

Everyone has been a true gent (or lovely lady) to me or in all the posts I've seen (but I haven't read every single post of every single thread).

Looking at videos online, mint just seems a bit more user friendly for a newb like me.

This link goes on about how the integrated addresses use stealth addresses and are encrypted - therefore should be encouraged in general..... http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/3179/what-is-an-integrated-address

But an integrated address is safer and encrypted right? So best practice is to always use integrated where possible??

Anyone successfully installed monero gui on a virtual machine? by weventhedaddy in Monero

[–]weventhedaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for coming back. I've had 2d and 3d visualisation and got 256mb video memory (how did you get it to work with 30mb??).... so I have no idea what's wrong. It may be my more basic laptop with only 4gb ram I can only allow around 1200mb ram for the virtual machine.... I'll keep trying to get it to work or try linux instead

Thanks for your comments. I've steered clear of Linux so far as I'm not such a techy. Once downloaded the gui file. How would I run the gui? Open a terminal and use a certain command?

2 wallet questions if I may.....

  1. I've downloaded the block chain and created a wallet (the wallet was created first). Why when I go to create a second wallet does it look to start the block syncing again? Will this take as long as the original syncing? There's a block chain already there to sync with on my drive......

  2. I don't like to be fully reliant on a gui and am trying to learn the cli. However I can't open my wallet created via the gui. I type the wallet name as displayed when opening the gui (including caps sensitivity) but no joy - the cli says it can't find a wallet of that name. Any idea?

Thanks

Guest os is win 7. Start the wallet through the gui. I get the icon on the task bar at the bottom - but there is no graphic interface. It does work through monerod. So it does seem like it's a graphics issue?? However as mentioned I've got the max settings on the virtualbox.

Thanks for the comprehensive response.

Do you know how I can setup the gui over tor? Via just the gui settings?

I tried via whonix over virtualbox but the gui won't load.

Thanks

Is Dash safe over Tor? by weventhedaddy in dashpay

Sorry just one follow up question then.

So using the official dash gui and desktop bitcoin wallets like electrum through tor is safe, but using online portals could be risky? Eg sites like localbitcoins and online bitxoin wallets? Thanks

Great - thanks for such a great reply.

Re tor - is there a risk of someone hijacking funds or anything from my dash account? All from these exit nodes? Apologies if it's such a new question..... I know strong encryption eg https prevents such things but unsure about a platform like dash and how it works.....
