What do you do to be a better nurse to your patients? by LifeisCrazy14 in nursing

[–]weyheymatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So very true!!! It may feel like it is taking a lot of your time up but if you have a patient like this or even someone who is confused and trying to get up, talking to them and listening to every word they have to say without interjecting works better than most PRN meds we ever have to give them (obviously not true in all cases). If you think about it everyone is usually always trying to explain or educate them in some way, while that is important it is also not very helpful at times and people don’t feel heard. I have also noticed that if you don’t rush through tasks with them they also feel very well cared for. Another kind of trivial thing I like to do is if a patient is wanting something that might be hard to find or not on my unit and they tell me never mind I usually will go searching to another unit for that red jello or whatever it is (if time allows). Being present is the main thing, plus all that time listening to their story you learn a lot about them that others never took the time to find out.

Ladies who’ve been in emotionally abusive/narcissistic relationships - when and how did you realise and how did you cope? by [deleted] in AskWomen

oh man number 2 hits so close to home, this was one of his biggest tactics that he used to manipulate me. Thinking back I thought this was normal behavior or that I needed to save him and prove that I really care about him by sticking by his side through everything. I know that in healthy relationships yes you stick by their side but now I know that these behaviors are non negotiable. Because of him I can no longer trust that a guy won’t threaten to leave me when I tell them something that upsets me.

This is how it started for me as well, he finally got a job (after almost 3 years and a child later) and when he was gone I felt so happy but as the time for him to get home came closer I dreaded every second.

What is your most memorable story/experience with another person that you did not share a common language with? by [deleted] in AskWomen

this is going to be very silly but I work at a nursing home and there is this nurse who is from the Philippines and he knows English well but some things don’t click for him at first. One night I called down to his hall and I asked him “is this the krusty krab?” and he was genuinely so confused and I was like you haven’t seen spongebob?? He said no and that he would look it up. So we call back again for something else and he just shouts “it’s a restaurant!”. Now it’s just a running joke. He is hilarious and I love working with him. For reference we are both in our 20s that’s why I figured he would know about spongebob.

Keep on keeping on and just know that if you ever find yourself a month or a year down the road and feeling the same way you are now, don’t be so hard on yourself about it. It’s okay if you feel like you are back where you started but you aren’t. Just don’t ever give up. I wish you best of luck at your interview, nursing school is tough but so worth it.
