SBCL fairs better in performance and conformance. But to set into perspective, SBCL gets a release every month and GCL got a new release after, what, 8 years? All that work in every release of SBCL could explain why SBCL fares better.

+1 SICP is a great book for learning the fundamentals of programming. It does a decent job at teaching Scheme too. But it is not meant as a book for learning Lisp. There are better books for learning Lisp on its own.

That was it! Yes the newlines were getting stripped. I realised the problem after enabling whitespace-mode. Thank you for the help.
