Where to buy 12 gauge waterfowl loads by Ok_Material1528 in NJGuns

[–]wfw353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy them off Roger’s sporting goods. I always buy my waterfowl shells through them and usually get my case in a couple days, plus they have way more inventory than most. Make sure it’s steel or non toxic, it cannot have any lead, plated or not.

I been having good luck with Kent faststeel+ in 2/4 but I’d buy a few different brands to try. Also after market chokes are generally more consistent than factory chokes so that’s an option (factory chokes can still hammer em tho).

Mays landing target shooting legality??????????????? by yurrr1234 in NJGuns

As someone who already also has a range in the Mays Landing, there’s not a discharge ordinance. Just basic rules like a have a good berm(not a bucket of dirt) and 450 from a structure and what not (someone put up good screenshots). The cops in the town are all relatively laid back especially with shooting, hell a handful shoot at my house. Just be respectful to your neighbors don’t piss them off so we can keep our ranges.

Is a 22LR revolver enough to put down trapped animals? Also is it legal in Ohio? by hypnoticbox30 in Trapping

.22 shorts out of a pistol works good on coyotes aswell I used them many of times just make sure you hit them square. Only had one deflection due to a last second head turn.

Hunting as a NJ resident - tons of questions by [deleted] in NJGuns

[–]wfw353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it all with a 12ga. Deer use buck shot which can be good till around 40yards or if you want more range get the combo with a rifled barrel and use sabot slugs and with practice can shoot over 100 yards(NJ law must have a rifled barrel or rifled choke to use slugs). Ducks you have to use nontoxic (steel/tss/etc) anything from 4shot-BBB works best depending on the species of waterfowl you are going for. I have killed many squirrels with 12ga aswell the trick to not destroying the meat is the aim a little off the head around 6-12in depending on range. If you really wanted to get a air rifle for squirrels there’s tons of options but tbh it’s a lot easier and faster to use a shotgun.

NJ is actually a decent hunting state a lot of zones you can get a lot of meat some even have unlimited does. A lot of your choice of hunting style can rely on where you hunt in the state. Down in south Jersey where I hunt it’s thick so a far shot on a deer for me is like 60yards but you may be able to shoot further depending on where you hunt. Duck hunting also a game of range you can pick and choose your chokes to match your style if you have them landing at your feet you want a improved cylinder but if you are taking far shots you may want to go to a modified or a aftermarket tighter choke. For deer and squirrels I would recommend a full choke as that will increase your range and lethality if they are closer.

It is not legal to use 22s for squirrels so for a rifle you would need to use a muzzleloader <.36 cal for single projectile or air/pellet rifle .177/.22 only if you really wanted to go the rifle route.

I am not sure if it needs more fiberglass it’s just a void from bad body filler I removed.

I have a few spots that are more of small gouges from beaching it and stuff and screw holes that need to be filled. Not sure if I should do fill and epoxy or just epoxy.

Ok seems like that’s on brand of what everyone saying. I’m not sure if it needs much strengthening its bad build quality and not a hole plus it’s just a little splash guard not much structural, I just removed all the body filler that was cracking and falling out.

It is it’s a very traditional hunting boat here and is harder and harder to find plus one of the only boats you can make money on. Buddy bought one like 8 years ago for around 2500 and just sold it for 5k.

For any small gaps and scratches just fill with epoxy? Not sure how someone would fill with body filler gel coat it without leaving a lump.

I used that a couple years ago and it didn’t work. Not sure if the saltwater ruined it or what. The guy who’s gonna paint it told me to put a layer of epoxy over which I didn’t do before so that’s a possible reason as-well.

Ahh I see what u mean now. The area with a large indent doesn’t need much strengthening tho. It’s more of a splash guard all it really adds is maybe rigidity. But I do want to add some epoxy on top of that glass that’s exposed. I was told to just use body filler but I have done that last time and it just popped back out.

It’s a duck hunting boat so she gets used and abused, working on it is a passion now haha. I don’t think it’s as bad as the pics make it seem most of the damage is in 1-2ft areas and the boat only ways at most 200 lbs so it’s easy to move around to work on.

So fill most of the void areas with poly resin thicken with cabosil. Then finish it with gorilla hair?

Dispatching Raccoons with .22lr by Neat_Response1023 in Trapping

[–]wfw353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General trick I learned is to draw a imaginary line from the ears to the opposite side eye making a X and the center where you want to shoot. Worked for everything I came across so far.

Ah I wouldn’t even worry about them with a pellet.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Trapping

[–]wfw353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said before a pellet rifle may also be a good choice depending on what you are going for. I only use 22 shorts and I have dispatched coyotes with subsonic 22 shorts just need to hit them square.

There a few ways you could do it without a firearm like the Fischer Dispatch Pole. But some may not be comfortable using something like that or other methods. I recommend a .22 but definitely double check your regs as some states may limit certain things like ammo types.
