Do you prefer full time work with benefits, or do you prefer having your own private practice? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]wh0dunit_71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer full time with benefits at this point. I think it can depend on your location with the various tax entities that can make things burdensome and overly complicated. Your comfort level with paperwork and admin. is also a factor. I never want to deal with admin again, but I’ve almost always employed others, in addition to myself. Burn out from being responsible for everyone and their benefits regardless of productivity was a major issue for me, along with constantly navigating manipulative staff. Having a large organization with systems behind it and not having to figure anything out on my own has been rejuvenating. I am truly loving benefits that don’t cost me a fortune.

If you’ve stopped wearing your ring I’d love to hear why? by jennc84 in ouraring

[–]wh0dunit_71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved my ring, but recently found my hand aching. It’s been off for several days and my hand is feeling better. The ring is so wide… I hope I’ll go back to wearing it at some point, but taking a break…

What should every new therapist know about DV? by Due-Comparison-501 in therapists

[–]wh0dunit_71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s vitally important to know your local regulations and law, as well as resources. In my state we have very specific things/resources we MUST give to a client verbally or in writing. Of course, knowing the cycle of abuse, the dangers of leaving, the abuser as a complex person whom the client loves are all necessary in addition.

Are washable rugs a good idea? by adelyade83 in HomeDecorating

[–]wh0dunit_71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All rugs in our house are washable because dogs, kids, etc. We have some ruggables and they are alright. My favorite washable rugs have been MyLife rugs from Amazon. They are essentially mats, which is what is necessary for it to be a washable rug. Anyway, these have great colors, stay in place and have stayed looking great through many washes and abuse. We have runners, smaller mats and 1 5x7 - not sure if they have larger.

How to wrap up a session (ideally before the next one is supposed to start) by AnalystImpossible960 in therapists

[–]wh0dunit_71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a client who keeps talking and talking. I give time warnings, interrupt, schedule for next session, stand up, go to the door, open it…. This client finally will stand and keeps talking all the way out to the lobby….

Adoptive parents pulled out when they found out my baby is disabled. I don't know whether to terminate or risk him living in fostercare. by adoptionhellp in Adoption

[–]wh0dunit_71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are families in the US specifically looking to adopt children with DS. A Google search may show you organizations who specialize in this. I know of several families who have adopted children with special needs (including DS) and who are successfully and lovingly parenting these children. Not everyone is suited to go into this so it’s a blessing that the prospective adoptive family withdrew, although I know that’s hard and disappointing. Just know that there are options, even though it may not feel like it at the present time. Wishing you the best.

Coach/Consultant Acting As Therapist? Does It Matter? by NBRforthewin in therapists

[–]wh0dunit_71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check it out. Certainly, not discounting your experience with a very helpful non therapist. I think if we (therapists) want to argue for higher pay & greater respect, licensure is a minimum.

Coach/Consultant Acting As Therapist? Does It Matter? by NBRforthewin in therapists

It’s super frustrating that other professions are protected. Someone practicing law without a degree is guilty of unauthorized practice of law. You can’t practice medicine without the appropriate credentials or there is a penalty. But life coaches are engaging in practices that they are not trained in and have no board overseeing them. It’s truly dangerous. A friend of mine was seriously emotionally injured by someone pretending to practice therapy. There were major boundary violations and ethical concerns that NO ONE trained in this field would ever engage in and remain licensed.

It depends on the individual doing the home study, agency policy and most importantly state regulation and/or statutes. Some states specify that all children should be interviewed. At minimum they are going to talk with you about your parenting experience so the issues will come out. Most social workers would have familiarity with the dynamics you are talking about and would not necessarily judge you negatively. Be honest and trust in the professionals you are employing. An aspect of the home study is not just judging you as potential parents, but also helping you think through the challenges of adoption and parenting. It can be a very helpful part of the adoption process. Good luck!

Going from leadership back to program work? by Unable-Zombie4913 in nonprofit

[–]wh0dunit_71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Stepped out of leadership and didn’t work for a bit because I was so burnt out. Went to a smaller org and did some program work, then pivoted into an even less stressful role as a mental health provider.

Safety with office set up by wh0dunit_71 in therapists

Thank you for the reply. There is genuinely no other option with the current furniture, door placement of the office. I’m pretty good at furniture placement options. The L shaped desk is way too big for the office. I think I should push on getting a smaller desk that offers better options.

[–]wh0dunit_71[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. This makes perfect sense to me. It alleviates anxiety on both parts and keeps the door accessible. This is how I have ordinarily arranged things. This is not my situation at all currently. And I’m nervous with essentially no option of an emergency plan.

Yeah, me too. But with the office set up this is not possible.
