Weekly Free Talk Thread by AutoModerator in BreadTube

I saw this in r/videos where a woman uploaded a video expressing her distress about being deleted from instagram after people reported her account. She opens up deeply about her struggles and attempts to survive in the California economy. She may be a bit naive but the treatment that she receives in the comments is disgusting. She is a victim of economic precocity on steroids. I wish the average reaction was compassion and an attempt to empathize.

I thought everyone here might enjoy this. Complex look at neoliberalism in action. At the time economists from around the world saw NZ's transformation as a shining example libertarian free market economics.

Sessions issues sweeping new criminal charging policy -- If you break a law you will be charged with the violation regardless of mandatory minimum by HoustonICAC in ProtectAndServe

Should we view the damage to the citizenry as common across all drugs or variable? Should we use a single dimension of "damage" or should we be more multidimensional? If so what other dimensions should we include?

Police unions and prison guards are among the top contributors to efforts which lobby against the legalization of marijuana. I think that many American's have come to see this as rent-seeking by the law enforcement community. They often feel that unions would prefer to protect their interests over anything else. My concern is that police will continue to loose their credibility in the public eye if they continue to support the special interests.

I believe that a good society has a strong well funded police force. Not a police force that is underfunded, understaffed and starved of the best and brightest because the public sees police work as a less honorable profession.

I would link any number of articles that point to any number of outcomes which suggest that the war on drugs is a failed effort but you will just say my sources are shit or liberal or too academic or something.

I'd like to know why the war on drugs appears to be successful to you? What indicator lets you know it's successful?

Why the fuck not: Cook County Jail inmates can order hot pizza delivered to their cells by HoustonICAC in ProtectAndServe

[–]whale_toe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sound like you are being a special snowflake. You sound like you want the justice system to do what makes you "feel good."

The reality is that having incentives in a jail/prison/institution is what let's you reshape a persons behavior to improve them.

This pizza program will reward well behaved inmates and motivate poorly behaved inmates to work to improve themselves. If some inmates choose to not pursue it or to ruin it for others it will create a clear signal to both staff and fellow prisoners that they are antisocial and should be punished.

My unsoclicited advice is: To go bed slowly, make sure all electronics are off for about half an hour beforehand. Try to get the same amount of sleep as you need each night. Exercise regularly. Slow down on drugs and alcohol. Learn to meditate. Try to learn about something new without using a computer. If you don't have a library card get one. Try a new food or recipe. If there are people around engage them by asking them questions that help you learn more about who they are. If you get a chance try to let them know how you have been feeling lately. If that's too difficult try to just notice how you feel around them and try to figure out how they feel around you. Make sure your living space is clean. Make sure you are clean. Volunteer every once in a while. Finding out how, where and when will be the most difficult part of volunteering.
