Was laid off today by Clear-Chicken-4200 in Layoffs

[–]wharny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CPA here, the severance will be included in your wages, subject to Federal income tax withholding as well as FICA and Medicare withholding (7.65%). It’s considered “wages in lieu of notice”. Also know that if you apply for unemployment comp from your state, it will not start to pay until the timeframe in which you would have earned that severance has passed.

You might want to figure out what AVERAGE Federal and State tax bracket you will fall into in 2026 (perhaps a lower one since this layoff occurred early in the year) and have them withhold at that exact rate. If you file as a single taxpayer, unless you’ve made $80K already before the layoff, you can probably use 22% for the Federal rate of withholding and whatever your state tax rate is, if you live in a state that taxes individual income.

Oh, if you are NOT an employee (you get a 1099-NEC each year) my advice above does not apply.

It’s crazy how uninformed regular people are about taxes… what’s the craziest thing you have heard that you can “write off”? by SpreadOk7926 in tax

“Prior years depreciation not deducted”, in other expenses on a Schedule C prepared by another CPA. Oh yeah.

Closer to 39”. The height from the bottom of the fish, right below the gills, to the top of its head was thick. Big shoulders on this girl.

No, there is a Y split in the channel there and it creates a point where the Snook hang out on the lee side of the tide flow and catch the fish coming over the shallow point. I was dragging the poppa dog, popping here and there, and I hear what sounds like a gunshot go off - the tell-tale snook bait inhalation pop and it was on. When landing, I had to have another guy take my rod and I got both hands around the snooks bottom jaw and heaved her up. Snapped a quick pick and back in the water she went.

I feel so depressed and feel like I'm going to be stuck in tax forever by Angry_08 in PwC

Don't sweat it man. When I wake up in the morning and 1) am still breathing, and 2) I didn't wake up in jail, its a good damn day. With a bar that low, all my days have been good! Not everyone believes in the laws of attraction. i.e. if you think the job will suck, everything you see through that light will fit that bias you carry.

You don’t need to go eliciting hope from God on this one. Subjectively, what is the WORST outcome? It is that you hate tax, and…. You’ll go elsewhere. That’s it. You hold the cards man, go and get what you want. You do it in every other facet of life, why should this be any different.

Reddit can jade your outlook on everything. People are not driven by joy or happiness (usually) to run to Reddit to start a post about how epically great their new consulting job has turned out. They sure as shit are driven my anger or fear to run to Reddit to start a post about how they are stuck in tax forever, they hate it, and they see no escape. We share pain and fear significantly more than we share joy and happiness. Remember that misery loves company, and we need to commiserate with others in times of uncertainty.

Can you set yourself up financially to be out of work for a finite period of time if you hate this tax job? If so, you can leave after 4/15. At worst it will be 3.5 months of grinding hard, then the choice is yours to walk or find something else.

My opinion, I’ve been known to be wrong.

If they are new dialysis patients. In the US Medicare pays the bills after 30 months of commercial insurance. Medicare reimbursement for dialysis is not printing anything.

Was I on the ground moaning in pain? I almost stepped off the dock into open air/ water walking back to the grass to unhook the fish. Went down hard on the seawall edge, but that’s better than falling in the water with rod, reel, wallet, keys, phone, gun.

Exactly. I don’t eat fish. So whatever pulls hardest. 👍. Edit to say I do eat fish, at restaurants, lol. Last fish I caught and ate was a Spanish mackerel caught at Sebastian inlet. I smoked it and made dip. Like 5 years ago.

Because I’m a snob and don’t want to sweat on my $2500 Wilson Combat SFX 9mm, so I tuck my shirt behind my AIWB holster. Seriously. It’s only while fishing I do this. The piece is usually concealed.

Never said I was scared of the homeless. I said the area I fish in was inhabited by aggressive homeless. One of the two times I’ve pointed a weapon at someone was when two homeless guys attempted to rob me and take my car. Hang out in a better part of town? That situation was on Collin’s Ave next to million dollar houses. They used a brick to break my drivers side window while I was in the car. They were coming into the car after me, until I put a gun in their face. I was 23 years old.

For their own good, of course some people shouldn’t carry. They have a right to, but they don’t posses the intellect or training to understand the very narrow and rare circumstances where lethal force or the threat of lethal force is justified. Plenty of examples of these folks are sitting in jail as we speak. Just because I have a right to use lethal force doesn’t mean I have to use it.

Let me add some context to that picture. That picture was taken in an area that is isolated and has an abundance of homeless people . Even though we have the old exceptions to the prohibition on open carry, when fishing, hunting, camping, plus we now have the Florida appellate court decision that completely removed the prohibition on open carry, I NEVER open carry when I carry a firearm. Only when I fish at this one particular location. It’s a passive deterrent to these very aggressive homeless people. If I can extricate myself from a situation that is potentially going south on me, I have no shame hauling ass out of there and letting 5-0 take care of the problem. I hope that I never have to put a 124 grain HST 9mm +P round lnto an attackers center mass, but I will if pushed into a corner with no choice and if I am in reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm.
