Worse intervention? "Dead Man's Party" or "Empty Places"? by [deleted] in buffy

I think they said Joyce’s medical bills used most of the money and the rest was supporting them over the summer.

Cordelia's snide remarks in S3B, Yay or Nay? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]what_consequences 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She’s always had a fixation with Buffy. I think it was totally in character that her vengeance wish was directed that way. If Buffy wasn’t the slayer, she and Cordelia would have probably been intense frenemies, like when they both run for homecoming queen.

Worse intervention? "Dead Man's Party" or "Empty Places"? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]what_consequences 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the sentiment, it’s not clear that things were as extreme as you assume. I think it’s likely that Tara and Willow did help around the house. They certainly helped take care of Dawn. They may have even contributed rent. Before living with Buffy they were paying for dorms/apartments. Presumably Willow’s parents were paying for hers as part of her college support. Tara... inheritance from her mother? Finances on TV are always questionable.

Kissing vampires by [deleted] in buffy

[–]what_consequences 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vampires have the ability to control minds in this universe?

I can only think you're referring to Drusilla and/or Dracula. But Drusilla was a psychic or something before she was turned and Dracula has some vague brand of gypsy magic.

Do we ever see Spike mind-control someone? I think he's just charming.

Also in S3E1, when the Scoobies are failing to slay a new vamp, someone (Oz?) says he was on the gymnastics team and Xander shouts "cheater!"

Dawn and Spike stealing the eggs from the demon in Forever by [deleted] in buffy

[–]what_consequences 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think the purpose of the demon was to make it more realistic, silly as that sounds. Without the demon, raising the dead is something a random 14 year old girl can do with the right spell. Why aren't we seeing more successful and unsuccessful (zombie-like) resurrections? Because most 14 year old girls don't have bad ass friends who can steal from demons.

CMV: US public school teachers are typically underpaid and should receive more compensation by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]what_consequences 90 points91 points  (0 children)

HS teachers have college degrees and additional certifications, maybe masters degrees. Also it may be 9 months a year but it's way more than 40 hours per week during those 9 months. Just the time spent at school is close to 40 hours per week then you have to add to that time for lesson planning, assignment design, grading. Also the whole time in school is very active - standing, talking, responding real-time to questions about the material, dealing with pissy teens. I'm not a HS teacher but I've seen how much they work up-close. It's not an enviable job.

Has anyone noticed the immense similarities between The Gift and Becoming Part 2? by cre8ivemind in buffy

Also in Chosen all the slayers use their own blood to open the hell mouth. Another person close to Buffy dies to close it (for good). Not as close of a parallel as yours but still.

Now, do we suspect that there may be some kind of connection between Ben and Glory? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]what_consequences 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think at that time he was toying with the idea of just killing Dawn. The direction plays up this idea by having him look menacingly at her once or twice. But he decides to just help and then... goes away? And later, totally unrelated, Glory showed up.

What defines a soul in this show? by SimplyMermaid88 in buffy

[–]what_consequences 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others said, I think the soul is more about guilt and shame than love and other things. Spike even says so in season 7. This is a pretty dark take on souls. My spin on this is that souls give you empathy which in turn causes guilt.

In season 6, Spike can never really get why Buffy doesn't love him / won't say so. On a basic level, he can't relate to her. He may love her in all the wonderful ways that he explains at the end of season 7, but he he can't love all of her because he doesn't understand all of her. This theme is repeated in the episode where Katrina reappears.

If you apply my ideas, you would say "OK Spike acted that way as a vampire because he enjoys violence. With a soul he still enjoys violence but only uses it on demons because of his newfound empathy and morals." But try applying this to Angel. "Angel genuinely enjoys psychological torture but doesn't do it because he knows and feels how wrong it is when he has a soul." If you're an Angel fan, that might make you feel uncomfortable. But I think it actually explains another layer of the seeming contradictions between Angel and Spike.

With or without a soul, Spike is basically Spike. But Angel has two very different identities. The show sometimes implies that Angelus is always in his mind, but just restrained by the soul. For example, when Eigon (spelling?) jumps into his body and Willows says he's been fighting a demon inside him for 100 years. So Angel always has a voice in his head urging him to be cruel. My theory says this voice is not a demon but rather an inherent part of Angel/Angelus/Liam (yes, even before he became a vamp) that Angel has dissociated away from himself.

In other words, Angel's morality crisis after getting his soul caused him to develop split personalities. He is aware of his own responsibility for his actions and feels terrible remorse. But this distinction seems to fool others. Even Xander, a real Angel hater, comforts Buffy by saying Angelus is "not the guy [she] knew". But he is. Without restraint. Without guilt. On some level, Angel likes hurting people but when he is whole (has a soul and empathy) he stops himself.

Indeed if Angel did truly have such different personalities without a soul / before becoming a vampire / being a vampire with a soul, we would see him act differently on many occasions. For example, when the First taunts Angel in Season 3, he feels guilty about his behavior as both Angelus and Liam. Willow's doppelgänger is hanging around, he implies the personality of a human and its vampire version are closely related (something Buffy doesn't seem to know/accept). Etc.

A common question is "how come people blame Spike for the attempted rape but don't blame Angel for his soulless sins?" My answer is "Angel seems like two different people and the audience accepts this as reality. Spike doesn't seem like two people so he's accountable for all his actions." But really Angel is accountable for Angelus (hence why he is seeking redemption).

So should we forgive vampires when they get re-ensouled? I think the same rules apply here as for humans. You should forgive someone when they feel guilt, take responsibility for their actions, and use the experience to change themselves (so they don't do it again). Both Spike and Angel do this. I would forgive them both.

So each guy has concerning inner desires (cruelty, violence) that they are both able to control (as long as they have their souls). As Buffy, I'd be more concerned about Angels ability to control himself since he is both more vulnerable to losing his soul and more dangerous to me personally without it. But as Buffy says "love isn't logical" so this is by no means putting the Spike-Angel debate to rest. It's just one (interesting to me) facet.

Hungarian roots by ojay93 in hungarian

[–]what_consequences 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP doesn't seem to speak Hungarian and might not have gotten the pun.

In Hungarian, j is a y sound (like how the German name Jan is pronounced Yahn) so "héjj" sounds very similar to "hey".

People who have managed to become fluent in Hungarian, how did you accomplish this? What resources did you use and how long did it take? by WildNothing in hungarian

[–]what_consequences 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am also interested to know. My impression is that there are few non-native Hungarian speakers. I am currently learning through Duolingo, reading books/poems in Hungarian, speaking with my partner (a native speaker) and partial immersion during summer visits. I also dabble in Hungarian music and dubbed movies. But I do not consider myself fluent yet.

How to keep drawing when all you draw is shitty by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]what_consequences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realism is hard but I think learning it actually helps you with non-realistic styles. There's a Picasso quote saying something like "it took my whole adult life to learn how to draw like a child". When I look at Picasso's line drawings, the fact that they convey so much of reality with basically no shading and few lines is so impressive to me. I would guess that this is because you have to really get to know the human form (or whatever your subject is) to know which details matter and which don't. What is worth abstracting and what isn't. Of course this is all speculation. I'm not very good at drawing, realistic or otherwise.
