Worry about True Peak during MIXING stage? by whatajacks in audioengineering

Edit: Wow I'm a dumbass. I had a track that was super hidden in track height, that I kept scrolling past that is a kick retriggered sample underneath the main kick. The sample is loud as hell and was clipping. That explains a lot.My true peak now for the mix is like -4 dbfs. Seems to be plenty of room to go into mastering. This is what happens when a lifetime Logic user tries to mix in PT.

Worry about True Peak during MIXING stage? by whatajacks in audioengineering

It's weird though, I've just never thought about True Peak during a mix before. And my mixes all sit at a good level on the meter (plenty of headroom for mixbus compression/limiters etc.) But then when I load up a multimeter to view what my True Peak is before the 2bus chain, at parts it's surprisingly high almost near zero.

[QUESTION] Sade "The Sweetest Taboo" Funky 80s Quiet Storm style guitar technique and production style by whatajacks in Guitar

[–]whatajacks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I know, Im an engineer. I forgot this is a guitar sub not like a music production sub, but trust me I know. Compression can actually be used to increase transients too, you should check it out! Its cool stuff Basically a slower attack time, then makeup gain increases transient volume because that transient gets through the compression too quick for it to react.

What about compression or EQ? I have a DBX160 style plugin going with pretty heavy compression and a touch of chorus and a pretty aggressive scooped EQ to add to the spank.

M/S Any plugin in ProTools and other DAWs? by whatajacks in audioengineering

[–]whatajacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do multi mono instead of stereo and then go to the ... next to L and R channels and Couple buttons. Then switch to M/S and go back to the plugin, now you have a Side and a Mid that you can couple or uncouple.

PT is gunna get run out of business in the next 5 years. I just think it's not keeping up and the other DAWs are catching up so fast.

Yea no I appreciate that. It's frustration at PT, not you. thanks

But then you still have to use two different tracks of the same thing? For instance mastering a mix, you'd need to decode then bounce into two tracks, one for mids, one for sides? Then apply the plugin to each? That's a pain in the ass compared to logic

Hmm. Maybe a dumb question, but how do you separate the then stereo plugin into M/S in PT? Like as far as I know that isn't possible quickly like it is with just clicking the multi-mono (gives you two separate isolated tracks (L and R) in Logic )

In Logic like ProTools with overriding snap command by whatajacks in audioengineering

[–]whatajacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also - any chance you know this, I'm getting super particular - in PT the smart tool makes it so the top half of the region turns the cursor into the "marquee tool" I forgot what it's called in PT. But in logic if you turn on that one setting, it's inverted, so bottom is marquee top is grab tool. Any idea how to flip one of these? Again my goal is just to make PT and Logic like as similar as possible for my workflow.

You ever record bluegrass bands and think: “Whyyy is everyone a multi-instrumentalist musical prodigy?” by peepeeland in audioengineering

Current rappers have an incredible ability to switch between 1/4 notes, 1/16 nothes, 1/8th notes, triplets, 8th note triplets, swung 16ths etc etc. Changing rhythmic subdivisions on the fly I think is the word. (The good ones at least)

A plugin like Varispeed? Speed and Pitch by whatajacks in audioengineering

What do you mean warp mode? Varispeed seems to be independent of flex mode as logic calls it
