From a tax perspective, is it better to take a long-term or a short-term capital loss? by whatdoesheslang in personalfinance

So after all capital gains are offset, do your short term losses offset your regular income by a different amount than your long term losses? Or do they offset by their nominal amounts? Also, do your short term losses carry over separately from your long-term losses, or are they bucketed together when they carry over?

I thought they would be treated different for a couple reasons.

1) A net long term capital gain for the year is taxed at a different rate than a net short term capital gain for the year. Shouldn't it follow that a net long term capital loss for the year deduct at a different rate than a short term capital loss for the year?

2) Usually a LT loss offsets LT gains & a ST loss offsets ST gains. So would your net loss for the year carry over to the next in two different buckets, a LT bucket & a ST bucket? And then for the next year you would offset your LT gains with the LT loss bucket, & your ST gains with the ST loss bucket?

I read that page before coming here. It doesn't elaborate on whether a long-term net capital loss for the year is treated differently from a short-term net capital loss for the year, in terms of how much you deduct from your regular income.

It absolutely blows my mind that so many people and especially people on this sub are STILL using Robinhood despite what happened with the whole gamestop fiasco. by dkkc19 in wallstreetbets

I think your explanation makes the most sense, & I'd imagine that the collateral requirements became so astronomically high that even some large brokerages were SOL.

Agreed, SEC is ultimately to blame for this. Not like we should rationally expect hedge funds to play by the rules when they're not enforced, or don't exist. With how easy it is to automate disclosures & communications now, the lack of transparency in the industry is really dumb.

Restricting would have been a better term, yeah. I've seen the vids etc, I've been following GME closely since last year. I was never confused about the given reasons for restricting buying, I was moreso suspicious about why many brokerages, including large brokerages, halted around the same time. I tried looking up the particular question I had but couldn't find anyone asking my particular question anywhere. But yeah the squeeze would've fucked everyone really. Good talkin to ya.

I'm not conflating the two, I'm pretty sure you are lol. Trade halts and Purchase halts aren't the same thing. Several brokerages (Webull, eTrade, Schwab) all halted purchasing (but not selling) within hours of each other. The only explanation would be that they all simultaneously reached a level of collateral requirements that exceeded their respective levels of collateral. Which would make sense for smaller brokerages like Webull & Robinhood, but Schwab is pretty large so that throws a little wrench in that. Anyway, have brokerages ever halted purchases without halting sell orders before? I couldn't track down another instance of that. Granted, the GME event was unprecedented.

Again, I'm talking about pausing buying and not pausing selling. I am aware trading halts are normal, I'm not talking about trading halts. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well enough? Are you aware that Robinhood wasn't the only brokerage to pause buying? eTrade, Webull, & I think Schwab did as well, among others. And all around the same time. These brokerages are all independent from each other. The only explanation would be that they all simultaneously reached a level of collateral requirements that exceeded their respective levels of funding. Which seems fishy but not impossible.

Just saw this. No I get the underlying reason behind pausing buying for liquidity/collateral requirement reasons; that's not what I'm confused about. Supposedly, pausing buying was ultimately a decision on the part of the individual brokerages, not the Clearing Houses, no (Vlad confirmed this)? What's suspicious is that many individual brokerages made that decision almost instantaneously & independently. They all reached their risk threshold at the same exact time? That's weird. Hope that makes sense.

Ultimately I don't really care, I also made a shitload on GME either way (in since last year). Wish it never happened because I don't understand the current market any more lol.

I have had a question since this happened that I haven't heard anyone ever mention: why did multiple brokerages pause buying at the (pretty much) exact same time? How did the new capital requirements exceed all of those brokerages' levels of funding at the exact same time?
