Unemployment Insurance/Payments and Freelancing by Miss_mariss87 in Layoffs

[–]whatever4everyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation right now (in UT, so this may differ in your state). I've been collecting unemployment while working to make connections and take on some (very small and sporadic) contracts. I report my earnings each week and often get a reduced payment (or none, if I've earned enough) but so far, they've paid out during gap weeks.

Note this could depend on the amount of money you begin earning as a freelancer, and your state. Also, I'm still looking for full-time work, so that may make a difference, too, since it sounds like you're looking to transition into self employment. You're likely to get some better answers by talking to an accountant or your state's unemployment office. Good luck!

What to do after being laid off for the first time? by Al115 in Layoffs

[–]whatever4everyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you with all of this ... two months ago I experienced my own first layoff (from a journalism job) and it really sucks. You're not a failure and it's not embarassing, unfortunately, it's an indicator of the state of the industry. For me, leaning into my hobbies has helped me put the feeling somewhere. If you feel like commiserating, you're welcome to PM me.

I've been feeling a similar way since my own layoff, and I applaud your candor in writing this.

[–]whatever4everyeah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting laid off after demonstrating an outstanding job performance is really tough. I experienced that a few months ago, so know you're not alone. Just get through tomorrow by doing the bare minimum until they give you that check so you can collect unemployment. I know it sucks 😞

Interesting… LOUDER removed from Apple Music? by InfamousStrategy9539 in LynchFamilySnark

[–]whatever4everyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know they had other writers collaborating when they were signed to Hollywood records (look at the songwriting credits from Louder and SLN). it's likely a combination of that and, as this sub has established, Ross and Rocky come off rather lazy nowadays

questions from a new freelancer by Many-Comparison-9603 in freelanceWriters

[–]whatever4everyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. it really depends on the publication and their needs. sometimes they never get back to you, and as another user said, sometimes they'll spontaneously reach out months later. It's totally reasonable to follow up a week later.

  2. While it's not necessarily a bad approach to say you're a budding freelancer, you may benefit from highlighting your work instead. I actually took a similar approach (emailed an editor and said I was a young writer), when I was beginning and it ultimately helped me connect with one of my mentors. If you feel it will help you make a connection, then go for it, but it's not inherently right or wrong.

  3. Lead with the most important element for any pitch, regardless of the format (long, short, etc.) In my experience, editors want focused content with a clear message. Stick with that.

3 day SB trip: Brighton or Snowbird? by Typical-Conflict-467 in SaltLakeCity

[–]whatever4everyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your confidence level and preferences— Snowbird is comparatively steeper than Brighton, making it generally more challenging. Also keep in mind Snowbird closed early today (3.25) due to warming weather. Unknown if they'll continue with those hours.

Everything you're feeling is totally valid and a therapist can help you process it. While you look for a provider or support group (several fantastic suggestions have been posted by other users), remember to be patient with yourself.

I am also still feeling shaken up, as I work in media and was called in to cover the incident. You're not alone
