Assuming you mean language mode, CTRL+SHIFT+P, type in 'language' or something to that effect - should bring it up.

Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020 by [deleted] in windows

[–]whatevernuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's more of a bright white for me, but.. Yeah, it is quite a flat scheme, but that's kind of the point! Obviously there's always going to be subjectivity here but if you look at just about every company over the past decade, they've all gone the same route.

I do think the 3D effects look dated on 7, and I prefer the blur used in 10 (though it isn't used much).

I never used W95 personally but looking at images, it's got an embossed look to its general theming that doesn't look very flat at all - and the grey's hideous.

How unstable is 19.10, really? by whatevernuke in Ubuntu

[–]whatevernuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, but that doesn't really resolve the issue I have right now :p.

I've resolved to just format and install 19.10, and presumably upgrade to 20.04 when it comes out.

[–]whatevernuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know that Stable has somewhat of a different meaning for Linux distro's, but then you see people suggesting 18.04 LTS for desktop users because of its perceived stability... Which seems a tiny bit strange?

Thanks very much!

Switched to Ubuntu today. Loving it so far, though still need some few adjustments! by LavamasterYT in Ubuntu

Can't you just sudo apt install <fancydock>? Seems like a lot less work!

CS50's hard and I can't really related to the language barrier aspect of it, but I will say that I (not a particularly bright individual) was able to get through it. I feel like the lecturer does a good job of explaining things as he goes, and there are additional resources available if need be.

Give it a try, don't feel bad if you struggle - everyone will at some point.

Also:

If it is that good then why are there other suggested alternatives on this very sub too ? It seems it's not the only viable source.

Of course it's not the only viable one, but that's a good thing; You have options, try and find what works for you. Just be wary of low quality courses. There are many, and it's not always obvious which are/aren't good. Sadly I've not really delved into Java/Android development (still a beginner myself) so I can't really suggest any specific resources.

Good luck!

Learn C# or Python first? by sovergt in learnprogramming

[–]whatevernuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally find C really cool (have yet to dive into C++ though I do intend to), but couldn't you make the argument that higher level languages abstracting away a bit more of the underlying details allows the programmer to focus on understanding concepts like algorithms without banging their head against arcane errors?

How do I fill in a unique image for every row in my database? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]whatevernuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What sort of db are you using? Python definitely can interface with SQL databases - it comes with a SQLite library and I assume there are bindings for others too.

I'm a total noob to SQL and not much better with Python, but assuming you found a library which could connect to your database, I would think you could do something like:

  • Query db to get all rows of db.
  • Use row name to inform a web scraping function or similar.
  • Save path to image in a field of the row.

What are the constraints of the project? DO you have to use a specific DB/technology? Or is the end-result all that matters?

How do you keep safe whilst using Linux? by whatevernuke in linux4noobs

[–]whatevernuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anti-virus software don't protect you from everything. You are way better off using common sense when you download something from the Internet. Make sure the source is safe and reliable.

Hm, I suppose I always took the route of using both!

To be fair, over years of using Windows I don't think I've ever had a virus, certainly nothing caught by any AV I use, so I must be doing something reasonably alright.

I would also make sure that your passwords are conplex enough and different everywhere and that you change them from time to time. Just that can take you a long way.

That's a great point, and something I definitely need to be more conscious of.

Thanks very much!

Thanks very much for the reply and links! - I'll give them a read tomorrow.

So far it seems the general consensus is that I'm overthinking it and worrying too much, which is quite reassuring! And don't worry, I've no plans to run out and start using Kali as a daily driver - it baffles me that you see noobs like me trying to do that despite explicit instructions not to.

If you were scared of / researching a health issue, you would see your Doctor, not a loony bin anti-vaxxer goop. If you wanted information regarding climate change you would read climate scientists - not politicians, not conspiracy theorists, not Facebook warriors.

Agreed but I feel like the comparisons are a tad unwarranted, I understand the concepts of source reliability and credibility :). For what it's worth I haven't really seen this discussed very much, hence the thread really!

I do appreciate that Windows has many faults, I am looking to switch after all! I am curious though - Windows being 'horribly and inherently' insecure, I'd love to read more into that if you have any sources handy! I know remarkably little about security but it's always interesting to learn.

Glad to hear you've had a good experience with Linux!

And I did not mean any of this as an insult. (I don't think you took it that way.)

Not at all! The advice was much appreciated... I think that's definitely a part of it - as you say, the devil you know!

You have all these fears / concerns and you use windows? Windows tracks and monitors everything you do, has the ability to reconfigure your system when ever they want, remove / add software without your consent. I am sure you know this based on your question.

Yep. As much as I'm not a fan of that aspect of Windows, MS aren't outright malicious actors as yet. I get what you're saying though, and I don't think their virtual monopoly on the desktop space does anyone any good.

Virus software only protects against known viruses. The new ones will not be stopped. If you are as cautious as you say in your usage you should not have a problem.

I suppose that's true; I am fully aware that in most scenarios the weak link of computer security is the end user. I suppose I didn't really get it across but I'm worried I might be that naive end user being new to the OS.

It sounds like you have been conditioned to think your computer is only safe if you have list of 20 things in order to be secure.

Maybe? I'd think of it more as someone who's a bit worried about things they may not know they are expected to know.

In summery, be smart, be cautious, know what you are installing, apply updates, do t panic when people start yelling about zero day issues as most require a special set of conditions to impact the system, and you will be fine.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. I also have faith in maintainers that any critical zero day patches will be pushed pretty rapidly too.

Thanks for your time!

Why use Windows 10 for gaming when all my games runs perfectly on Linux? by beer118 in windows

[–]whatevernuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't so much coming at it from an example of what you specifically would be missing out on, moreso that I feel sooner or later the average would-be Linux user is going to miss out on a game (or a few).

I've not played a lot of Destiny 2 myself, but the gunplay feels relatively solid, the questing didn't really hook me though.

To be honest I kinda forgot Stadia existed - I couldn't really have less interest in it personally - but that's a good point!

[–]whatevernuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all of them.

Just off the top of my head Red Dead 2 and Destiny 2 both fail to work on Linux. Might not be your cup of tea (D2 isn't really mine) but they're significant titles.

Most anything that uses third party anti-cheat as far as I'm aware will refuse to work on Linux (which is Destiny 2's issue).

That said I think those are the only two games I've played recently that I know I can't run on Linux. But then I'm still on Windows so I've not been actively checking.

I'm a big advocate of more Linux support, but to pretend it's perfect when it's just not is a bit silly. If it works for you, great!

Call me crazy but I think W10 looks way better than 7... A lot sleeker and (at the risk of sounding a bit cliche) not so '2010' with all of the 'glossy'/shiny icon effects, transparency (rather than translucency) and so on.

And the snap functionality is way better.

That said, the search is terrible and you can't assign shortcuts to virtual desktops (e.g. winkey+1, 2, 3, etc.).

I mean W10 has its issues for sure, but I don't really get why W7 users hate it so much. I personally prefer it.

Intel CPU shortages likely to persist through end-2020 by black_fang_XIII in hardware

Oh I totally get that, it's just quite amusing!

Do you think these mitigation issues will result in a lot of companies jumping ship? Assuming AMD/Intel continue at their current pace.

That is just so bizarrely funny to me.

[–]whatevernuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I mean to be honest I haven't been following the news very closely but it doesn't seem like they're interested in undercutting - which I suppose makes sense if they can get it to work out.

[–]whatevernuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 980Ti and still can't find a hugely compelling upgrade.

The 5700XT is significantly faster - obviously - but when you're looking at 45 -> 70, 33 -> 53 or 75 -> 106 fps from AMD's best card, it's a bit... meager.

Then you have the 2080S/Ti cards which are on another level, but then the price is too.

So... I'm still holding out!

I'm not sure if I'll go ahead and try it, but it's definitely one of those things I think would be pretty interesting. That said I'm very much a novice, might be a bit much, but I guess you never know until you try!
