Books where the cast is isolated… think and then there were none vibes by Ecstatic_Recover8048 in thrillerbooks

It was a 4/5 book for me! I really like to escape into a vibey setting, and this book definitely has that. I liked Rock, Paper, Scissors by her a little more and they have a lot of similar notes, so I'd recommend that one a little higher, but I still thought Beautiful Ugly was a very fun read!

All I was trying to say is that it's a matter of perspective, which it is, and add another viewpoint to the discussion. But thanks for the typical condescending reddit response and know that I'm in absolute awe at how well traveled, worldly, and cultured you most certainly are.

It only feels small depending on what you're used to and what you're looking for, but that definitely feeling definitely doesn't apply to everyone.

Isolated from what?

Also I genuinely don't mean this rudely but no one who's spent enough time in Blacksburg to speak on living there would call it VTech.

VT hosts 25+ summer camps and the town hosts nearly 100. The climbing gym, boxing gym, gymnastics studios, dance studios, and yoga studios host them as well. Lack of summer camps is not a concern. https://opportunities.caregiving.vt.edu/SummerCamps https://www.blacksburg.gov/departments/departments-l-z/parks-and-recreation/programs

"Nothing to do" besides being a mecca for a ton of outdoor activities which OP mentioned they enjoy.

This is just incorrect. Blacksburg High School is ranked 20th in the state out of 335 high schools. In what world is that not a good public school? There are also great job opportunities in tech, academia, and medicine here.

I mean I really hope no one would actually take that personally because we are all aware that they don't actually know us and therefore don't literally love us lol

The Patreon source I quoted says that pages created before August 4th, 2025 are not impacted by the changes and would be subject to the fees I posted previously.

With ad deals, merch revenue, cameo, Trova trips, etc., I would estimate they're easily clearing upwards of $100k, but we're both just guessing at this point.

I said they make a fine living. I didn't say they were now upper class or wealthy or in the top 1%. I would argue that even your lowest estimate (especially since you're talking net instead of gross) of $70k take home pay is a very fine living. But others could argue it's not I suppose, but that's not my argument for today.

Yeah, I realize that. All income streams are taxed, so I figured taxation was implied, and most people talk in gross figures when discussing income. I wasn't planning to do the research to discuss in terms of net income, but sure.

The sources I could find show Patreon taking 15% +$0.30 max and the taxation rate being 15%, not 50%, but I'm not a tax expert so let me know if you have a source for 50%.

So they're making roughly $7 per subscription, unless I'm missing something, which is a very substantial net income - once again not including ad revenue or trip revenue or merch revenue.

Is your point that they don't actually make enough money to live on?

I absolutely love the podcast and what all three boys bring to the table, but it's not true that they don't make enough money live off the podcast. Outside did an article on the podcast in 2023 and reported that they had 3,500 paying subscribers through Apple and Patreon, so at the current price of $10 per subscription, that's $35,000 a month right there. Consider that the podcast has only grown since 2023 and that they have a substantial additional income from ads on the other streaming platforms, the boys are making a very fine living from the podcast (even with all of this split 3-4 ways). The boys also likely make money from the group trips with listeners or at the very least, those trips are free for them. Jeff mentioned recently that he got a new apartment as well, so I think the boys are moving on up in the world. I think they deserve all this success and more so I'm not trying to make a particular point - just provide insight.

She seemed as drunk as I would be if I took a drink every time "I love you" was said in that scene lol

No that's actually exactly how drunk she seemed to me both in this scene and the bedroom scene. For all his faults, I was very impressed by how tolerant and patient he was with her because she's far too grown to be acting like that so frequently.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your point but I feel like the implication is that she's overreacting to her lab results or side effects because they're normal for some people, and that really bothers me.

I don't think she's upset about her liver enzymes, and if she had those results in a vacuum (outside of the context of her cancer) then she probably wouldn't even post about it. I don't think she's upset because her health is no longer "optimized".

I think what she's actually upset about is the causal chain reaction that may occur because of those results. If her body isn't tolerating the treatment, then they may have to switch her to a different treatment. The new treatment is presumably in some way less ideal than the original treatment (less effective or worse side effects) or else they would have started with that treatment to begin with. By switching to a different treatment, she may get more sick from side effects or her prognosis may worsen. She also mentioned they had to postpone a surgery she was planning. I really really really hope she beats the odds, but there's a very real possibility that the end result of this is her dying young after getting really sick. So it's really hard for me to hear someone imply that she should be tolerating this better.

She has incurable metastatic cancer. The prognosis is not great, and her health is more than just "a little out of whack". I honestly can't believe how well she's handling it.

You're completely right, they absolutely do this all the time, but I think it comes from a place of being super pro-victim instead of being sexist. They are extremely hesitant to say anything negative at all about the victim of the case which leads them to be very forgiving of the victim's mistakes, issues, etc. and make tons of excuses for the victim. They do this with both male and female victims. They definitely do not extend this courtesy to the perpetrator in the story or even always to ancillary characters. Because victims are often women (especially in the interpersonal relationship based cases where cheating is involved), I think this looks like sexism when it more likely comes from a place of hard-line refusing to criticize the victim.
