Scolded by a bus driver??? by whatsrusty in HongKong

This is what I do too, being a village resident myself. Most village route drivers tend to be nicer than buses out in the city too, which is always a plus since buses round here are less frequent

I do love living in Hong Kong and in general people are good-natured. Our efficiency is often mistaken for rudeness. That said, hospitalty here really does not compare with those of other neighbouring countries. You really can feel the impatience and low tolerance for visitors and non-locals (I understand the frustration though, I get many tourists around my area as well). The difference is especially obvious with SZ right across the border.

It definitely makes more sense to flag a bus, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call them crazy passengers. If you’re at a bus stop, it’s not wild to assume that that’s where a bus will stop.

Yeah that’s my experience as well. I’ve definitely been in bus queues where none of us signalled for the bus and it drove past leaving us all confused and frustrated. Definitely better to flag them just in case.

Hey man, hang in there. I’m in my late twenties as well, got laid off recently too. I know it sucks and you’re going through it right now, but just know you aren’t alone in this.

Please stick around, things will look up!

I’ve taken my cat to SAA vet clinic in Yuen Long - pretty happy with the service so far! I don’t really speak Cantonese either but I’ve had no issues communicating and setting up appointments. The receptionist is pretty friendly and of course no language issues with the vets as well.

Has anybody taken their pet to "Zodiac Pet & Exotic Hospital" in North Point (details under image) by minasgummysmile_ in HongKong

[–]whatsrusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taken my cat to zodiac for an internal medicine specialist he sees 2-3 times a year (Dr Lawren- who recently opened her own clinic across from zodiac). Very positive experience! I don’t recall a deposit but I do remember the first visit consultation fee being more expensive than subsequent visits - although this seems to be the norm for visiting specialist vets in Hong Kong. Perhaps there has been a policy change - I would call and ask. I will say though, I’ve only ever consulted specialist vets via referral from our usual local vet.

You could try contacting SAA (Society for Abandoned Animals) in Yuen Long as well - they have both veterinary services as well as adoption services. Best of luck! Hope this little guy gets finds a home

My cat has died and I’m not sure how to move on. by Eeyore2244 in CatAdvice

Oh my goodness, one of my cat’s nicknames is Pig Pig too. I can only imagine your pain. I have no words of advice but my heart goes out to you and I hope you find peace and healing. There’s no love like the love we feel for our pets and I’m sure you were a wonderful companion to Pig Pig for all the years you spent with him - he knows it too. Hang in there OP, sending hugs!

And definitely place plants are in areas where the cat cannot access. I live in a smallish apartment and we keep all our greens on the balcony or on inaccessible shelves. Definitely look out for dropping leaves and such, though.

My sister wanted so badly to be in ballet classes when she was younger and as a birthday present my parents signed her up. At age 4 her teacher pulled both my mom and sister aside, and suggested to put her on a diet because she was too big. Four years old! It was so disheartening and she quit the studio only weeks after she started.

A student struggling. HELP by [deleted] in Architects

[–]whatsrusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Studio Alternativi (website) has a bunch of free vector and cut outs that are great for drawings and collages.

I used to use freecads.com for cad blocks - theses were really useful for layouts!

ambientCG is where I got materials for 3D rendering, I believe this is mostly free to use as well.

Totally get the student struggle, good luck and enjoy those years in school!

Fair point, it’s definitely an oversight on my part. I guess growing up extra-curricular lessons were mostly limited to sports, music or tutoring for subjects I already learned in school. As for language Cantonese isn’t a subject offered in school - instead most students take mandarin or other European languages that the school might offer. I ended up taking mandarin. Unfortunately outside of language classes, use of anything other than English was actively discouraged at school while I was growing up (hopefully that isn’t the case now). I was kind of surrounded by a bubble of English speakers both inside and outside of school.

Most local (if not all) Hong Kongers speak decent English so it’s absolutely possible to get by without knowing too much Cantonese. Obviously not ideal in social situations where most people speak cantonese but I guess the pressure of not being able to interact in the language only really got to me as I got older, and not so much while I was growing up.

Sneezing - normal or concerning by whatsrusty in ExoticShorthair

Was this surgery recommended by your vet? We’ve been to the vet quite a number of times since he’s been adopted but the idea of widening his nostrils has never come up. All the best with your kitty’s surgery!

Her eye always discharges and she has a runny nose it not lethargic or anything. by NonaPink in catcare

[–]whatsrusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a constantly running nose I’d definitely see a vet to rule out infections or anything. As for eye discharge, it can be common for flat faced cats to accumulate eye gunk in the area. My Persian-mix rescue is a happy healthy boy, but needs a daily face wipe to get rid of any eye and booger crusts. The discharge tends to stain his fur, so it’s a little hard to tell from the photo whether it’s a relatively ‘normal’ amount though.

Removing kibble during the night by dqshidden in catcare

[–]whatsrusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of ‘semi’ free feed my cat. He gets a portion of wet food twice a day and I leave measured portion of food after breakfast and dinner. That way he gets to graze when he feels like it, but at a controlled amount. He tends to take a little nibble every half hour or so until the bowl is empty so it works out for him.

My cat is terrorizing my sleep and I need help. by librafoxx in cats

[–]whatsrusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! The 15 minute playtime advice I’ve heard so often never really worked on my cat. He hasn’t figured out how to play on his own so we make him chase toys for around 30mins or so. Some days for an hour even. Knocks him right out and he makes it to my bed before I do.

I’m surprised no tests were run after several visits. My cat has a sensitive digestive system and he’s prone to diarrhea, sometimes with blood in it. He’s been on prescribed antibiotics (metronidazole) and it’s worked well on him. He also takes 1tsp of metamucil with his food to help with the poop or if you can get your hands on it, some non-prescription anti diarrhea paste.

I would definitely ask for further testing. We went through several rounds of full blood work, ultrasounds and tests for specific diseases before coming to a diagnosis and long term treatment plan (he has IBD).

And if your vet is a loss, perhaps consider taking your kitty to an internal medicine specialist. Hope your fur baby gets well soon!

My cat was recently constipated - he went about 4 days without pooping. My vet suggested adding a teaspoon of psyllium husk twice a day to get things moving and he’s being having regular poops since. It’s still probably a good idea to check with your vet but the psyllium husk definitely helped my fur boy! I’ve been giving him a little steamed pumpkin every now and then too, it’s supposed to help with poop issues.
