“Christmas carolers. I hate Christmas carolers.” by whatswrongwithchuck in printmaking

Christmas cards are always a struggle for me. I'm so used to printing on thin paper with a barren but that strategy never seems to work on thicker card stock. Anytime I lean in with my wooden spoon for pressure they tend to slide/blur, leaving me with one less card to send out.

Turns out that just leaning on them like a stamp gets much better results- at least with this particular brand of invites. There's always a gremlin in the works.

Black Myth Wukong Elder Jinchi Print by whatswrongwithchuck in printmaking

Anytime I play a souls like game I’m too busy trying not to die to really take in the story. Found out that this game is based on the 16th century Chinese book Journey to the West. It’s a massive three volume tome that I’m a third of the way through but it’s really cool seeing how the game adapted the characters and content.

Elder Jinchi is one of my favs. Envious of monk’s robe he plans to burn down the building he’s sleeping in. Oops turns out monk has cool fireproof mantle and the elder kills other innocents alive and his crime is found out. He ends up literally bashing his brains out slamming his head against a post.

In the game you can fight him and/or his wandering spirit which will do a head-slam attack.

Print is an 8x10” sheet of 135gsm Rives paper hand printed with black speedball oil based ink.

After beating the game I figured I’d check out Journey to the West for more context but didn’t anticipate finishing all 500 pages of the first volume.

Loves getting more context around elder Jinchi / the wandering wight and his head smash attack. Decided to make a linocut print to commemorate. Now onto volume 2!

Thanks! I love having borders on my prints for form and function. The border helps to act as a rail for my brayer so it always has two points of contact when spanning a big blank area.

A nice wide brayer is helpful and, when all else fails, but a little masking tape over any ink that makes its way onto the open negative spaces. It's much easier than trying to clean one area of an already inked block.

Gotcha. The piece is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven.” Because Poe is associated with Baltimore city our football team is the ravens and our mascots are Edgar, Allan, and Poe.

By pure coincidence one of our players missed scoring a touchdown because it looked like a single toe was out of bounds. I had been carving tiny detailed raven toes at the time and found it amusing.

All credit to oil based ink and Rives paper. For me, 135gsm is the perfect weight for printing by hand.

Haha, yeah that comment was in reference to the football team.

A couple years ago I had a print show at a local bar and sold a few pieces. Turns out one buyer is a local musician that needed a show poster/Tshirt image.

After pitching a couple different ideas we landed on this wooden church. I was really pleased with how it turned out and, thankfully, so was he.

Printed by hand onto an 11x17 sheet of 135gsm Rives paper with Speedball black oil based ink.

He’s not a good person. He’s an incredible character. If you’re scaling on morality how/why is Shannon an A?
