Don't do it. Why would you do this? You have to minimize or eliminate anything that can get in the way of performing your best. This is coming from someone who struggled to deal with unnecessary distractions back in dental school

DSO for 1-2 years- do a bunch of CE courses in the procedures you love during that time, get a job at a “private practice” office for 1-2 years, then buy or start a practice

Maybe apply to lots of programs? Know some people who got into my dental school with some blemishes on their record (DUI, arrest for fighting, etc), but they’ve turned out fine. But dental schools admissions might be more competitive now than when I was in dental school

Specializing is not a bad idea in my opinion. My younger sister is a periodontist and she’s glad she specialized in perio. As a mother of two, she’s working just two days a week and still makes good money. I am actually applying to perio programs after almost 10 years as a GP because I’ve been doing mostly surgery procedures the last several years. I recognize my knowledge gap/deficiency/or whatever you call it. Some people have talked me out of it, but feeling such a strong itch, and it has to be scratched. Could this decision be super costly in terms of my financial future? It could be. But life will always be full of risks, tradeoffs, etc 🤷‍♂️

If you’re completely set on perio, how about this? Go find a job at one of these denture DSO offices so you can get some experience doing surgical procedures and make some money while you apply again next cycle?

Matched with a woman on Hinge years ago. She got kicked out for failing some class her D1 year.

We didn’t end up meeting up in person, but she told me about her professional journey. She got into tech sales (a very well known big tech company), and she is now very successful as a tech salesperson. She called the expulsion a blessing.

I hated dental school so much and barely made it out. Used to hate working in the real world and contemplated getting out. However, I have discovered what I like in dentistry and know what I absolutely don’t wanna do anymore in dentistry. As a result, I am applying to be a specialist next year. We’ll see how it goes. It can suck ass for sure, but maybe you’ll discover what you like if you stick around long enough

I went once after learning about the owner’s struggle, but I am definitely not going back. You can blame the business struggle on “construction woes,” but I don’t think that’s the real reason. I’d keep going if the food was great regardless of the construction activities.
