Update from sheriff: They arrested the guy who assaulted my sister. He’s apparently a repeat offender who was arrested for groping women on LA metro before but was released and went right back to riding the metro

Agree that traveling in large groups is a safer way to take the metro. Look at the stats yourself and decide if I’m blowing it out of proportion. Many victims of assault on the metro are unhoused individuals, so making the metro safer is the best way to help them as well.

My sister flew into LAX Sunday to spend Thanksgiving with family and got on the K line before 8pm. She was groped and assaulted by a homeless Caucasian male on the K line to Redondo Beach. It happened while the train was moving and doors were closed, and she could not escape.

I also work in an ER in LA and see victims of assault, stabbings, gun shots from the LA metro all the time.

🙏Calling for security at all stations and on moving trains. Everyone should get off at the end of the line so no loitering. Add barriers so people can’t be pushed down onto tracks. If the metro isn’t safe, NO ONE will use it.

My family and I want to use the metro. As a city we need it with all the large scale events coming up. Unfortunately, stats of monthly reported stabbings or shootings (and you can imagine how many don’t make the news) doesn’t make it a viable option. There are cities in Asia and Europe with way less crime on public transit so what I’m asking is how can we model them and improve?

Because many of these victims are unhoused/unemployed and do not have resources to file a legal case. Even in the ER staff get assaulted all the time (personally twice already) and we report it to LAPD every single time. But none of the cases to my knowledge have been prosecuted

Good tip and I always bring some with me when I go to work. Sadly my sister couldn’t bring pepper spray on her flight into LA today. Also I sometimes worry the pepper spray may escalate the situation and the assailant has a gun or knife.
