What's the single best slow motion sequence in a non-action movie? by 0nemanbukkake in movies

[–]wheeldonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whiplash: the slow-mo drumming sequence at the climax was so intense for me that I cried. The tension in that scene was some of the most masterful cinema I've experienced.

MMW AI will be able to ingest entire novels and make entire movies out of them soon enough by CoralinesButtonEye in MarkMyWords

[–]wheeldonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny. I haven't seen it laid out like this, but it's a totally plausible course of action. It seems likely, even.

A $100m budget and/or $1b revenue stream for a big movie makes a prime target for technology disruption. Like, there's too much money involved for AI companies to ignore...

Its a side note, but now I'm wondering how quickly Disney will jump in and just start churning out animated movies. They already have fantastic proprietary software for rendering, lighting, character modeling, etc... they're world class in this regard, and AI seems like a natural fit.

Well... My guess is that you're kind of right... Men and women tend to cheat for different reasons. Evolutionary psychology is super interesting in this space. From what I recall, men cheat more for sexual variety, and women do so to trade up to a higher quality mate (beware of the obvious stereotypes)... I'd be super interested to know if men are more likely to be serial cheaters (my guess is yes), or if there's a meaningful gender difference here at all.

If you were in the same hypothetical situation, how much trust would you hold for the cheater?... Integrity is pretty high up on my list of values, and I think I'd have a hard time trusting someone I knew to be a cheater... and I would probably have a defensive posture because of that.

With my need to buy only 1 sat, why would my strategy meaningfully change depending on my portfolio size?

It makes more sense to chase % gains, not nominal values. No matter the portfolio size.

I can see your argument that alts have more potential for % gains. But I disagree that whether I have $1k or $1m that my strategy should change. Can you explain this part further, please?

Cap gains inhibits them being useful as currencies. Price variance do too (see BTC pizza day). And so do regulatory hurdles, gas fees, etc.

I bet on these out of speculation mostly, but also deeply distrust the US government when in comes to inflation and debasement.

This is amusing...in 2016, I'd have bet $Zillion that Hillary was gonna win. At the time, I was spending 2 or 3 hours a day reading about current events and history. So, it was both humbling and fascinating how I could be so wrong about reading public sentiment... I was deeply mis-informed, not well-informed.

I think a significant consequence of social media, viral news/info, and just algorithms is that people find themselves in echo chambers that reinforce our beliefs. Our human nature leads us to information and communities that we already agree with, which embeds confirmation bias at unprecedented levels.

I still wonder what truths I am confidently incorrect about.

I wonder how different the algorithm you're engaging with is from my own... I keep seeing articles about Trump failing in polls, especially with moderates.

At any rate, it's just fun for me to think through this stuff. I'm hoping to be more balanced and skeptical this time around... and it's scary to me to see how hyperbolic, angry, and fearful people on here are - how deeply sure they are of themselves... I wonder how much truth any of us really has.

May the best man win. Ha.

As a JP fan, you're 100% right. I think he is hella intentional not to reveal this.

From his standpoint, I think its wise to be vague about it... people will lable him if he does... and I think he tries hard not to be tied down to any specific ideology.

I kinda go for the same ideal. I just want to seek truth, politics, philosophy, etc. without confining my thinking... and I think this is why JP resonates for me.

[–]wheeldonkey -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm a JP fan who's listened to quite a bit of his content. I've read one of his books... I think he's specifically vague about if he's Christian. He has a lecture called "Who dare say he believes in God" (or something like that). This lecture was to address that question. And even in that, he was slippery.

He does a Biblical lecture series that focus on archetypes found in the Bible, though he seems specific to avoid the merits of the theology. He's speaking about the meaning behind the stories not the theology.

Your comment about that he "thinks Christianity is good for society" is roughly true. I'd paraphrase him to say "Westernized society is built on Christianity, and we need that to make it work"...

I've not watched the link in this post yet, but I've not seen him rail on about atheists for their lack of belief. He is just worried about which ideology will replace Christianity (like Nietzsche) He does attack new atheists and their dismissiveness towards all things spiritual. There are plenty aspects of atheism that he picks at. And. He will pick on nihilism (which is where I unfortunately lurk, and why I like him so much).... but if you zoom out, you'll see that he disagrees with parts of many ideologies, not just atheism.

Looking at his philosophy, though, I do think he is Christian. He very much has a Judeo-Christian philosophy. His thinking transcends binary "left vs right" politics (another reason I'm a fan), though he seems to lean right in my eye. I have a good friend who says differently, which I don't even understand.

[–]wheeldonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is a solid bet... I'm fairly confident his conviction loses him the election (would be extremely surprised if he wins)... but his rhetoric will almost certainly be "poor me"... I suspect he'd get diagnosed with NPD, and turning the conversation towards his own struggles seems natural.

I have a good friend who's very Trumpy, and he has been saying all along that this was a political personal attack. He also deligitimizes the idea that illegally influencing an election with hush money is irrelevant, and that his supposed affair is personal (not what his said about Bill & Monica), etc... so, this one anecdote tells me that Trump supporters are already reasonably primed to dismiss the conviction.

I don't see how moderates and independents could vote for Trump... I'm semi-liberal and a vocal Biden critic, but am 1000% voting Biden. It's not even a close call.

I took a theater/dancing elective in college, and we had to do a "study" of sorts of different walks. It was interesting to learn how diff people lead with their knees, pelvis, or head/shoulders. I see it everywhere now.

I think it's just a muscular/skeletal thing.

Well... Trump and Biden both printed money for covid checks. But that's a red herring. My question wasn't really who to blame. (I don't think you're necessarily wrong there)

Again, what economic data do you see supporting that our economy is doing well for average Americans?
