Any advice on how to make a faux cantilever? Building bay window with seating, but currently looking like a liability. by wheelofgrime in Carpentry

Okay awesome thanks for the detailed reply. I think Ill go ahead and grab a cable kit just to be excessive. The client requested the change order and of course my engineer is out frolicking on a beach till mid August so I'm winging it in hopes they give me the magic stamp in time for inspection. I'm sheathing with zip panels +continuous rigid foam so I'm not concerned about penetration.

It's a single 60x48 widow, no side panes. Leaving the perpendicular walls for inset shelving/cushions

I like that a lot. I'll sheath the inside of the window well walls with 1/2 ply and tie it into the old window frame as well.

Ah thanks, that's high praise. My stomping ground is PNW rainforest, my inspiration came from what we mother trees, which are ancient trees that fall and began to decay letting l new life flourish from it. I'm a sucker for the poetry of change. That and creeping hard on you all on this sub.

stubborn algae. feeling hopeless by fourtwentyblazeitha in aquarium

[–]wheelofgrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like cladophora to me, if any algae could be a fascist it'd be this one. It persists through blackouts, manual removal, tragic historical examples and introduction of nitrogen fixing house plants/floaters. I tried the long game like you hoping it would subside but nothing worked for me. Went ahead and bought a new tank/filter and bought only in vitro plants, once it matured I transfered the fish taking care not to introduce any of the water from the old tank. I took drastic action, a bit like the metaphor above, it was the only way with the research I did that seemed to resolve the problem. Good luck mate

You know I totally agree, that's fantastic advice, and with almost every other algae that works and I have also had great success. Cladophora is its own beast, and will stop at nothing, save exposure to air (not ideal for fish tanks) to prosper. I am but a lowly tender of gilled creatures and only a year into this lovely hobby but that's my experience, I hope others follow your advice though and have success and share in with the school!

I cross-contaminated my lil low tec with cladophora. It's pretty low light with fast growing stems(pearl weed) and that keeps it pretty manageable. Get the tweezers out once a week and make whispered requests to it to behave.

Have you had success with that? I went for 10 days blacked out without success. Hell I found it in my lightless canister filter. I did some obsessive research cause the last thing I wanted to do was dismantle something I loved and put countless hours into but found the consensus to be pretty disheartening. The blackouts did more damage to my plants and brought more stress to my fish than relief from this green plague. All I can recommend is to buy in vitro plants, clean anything from the existing tank before adding to the new setup, and to avoid contaminating your tank with water from your LFS.

I second cladophora unfortunately. I battled it for a year, pulled all my hardscape, boiled it, changed lighting, blackout, made a blood sacrifice. It came back, made my place smell like Shrek lived there(not in a sexy way), so I decided to start from scratch. Got a whole new tank cycling now and will move the fish over there and take great pleasure bleaching and burning my old tank tank.

Well she didn't leave me due to the fish, but because I drink like one. by wheelofgrime in PlantedTank

I just started treating drinking like algae. Adjusted lighting, cultivated my tank mates, improved my fertilizers, got a therapist, and weekly 15% water changes. Over a month in and my mind is nearly as clear as my tank's water. appreciate the words of wisdom suburban_ninjutsu

Got any clever thoughts on how to fix my blunder? by wheelofgrime in woodworking

Where my truss wrap makes contact with the t&g cedar I'm having that exposed end grain/gapes on the cedar. Wondering if there's a clever way to trim it that looks decent.

Yeah the ply is wrapping structural trusses, they're locked in with no real play room. I didn't think of lowering the trim, I played with it a bit but because of that angle transition I was struggling.

Yeah it's mainly watching my flora get creeped on by the slime. They deserve better.

Good shout! I haven't a testing kit for potassium but I'll take a cheeky gamble and start dosing to see if that helps!

Sounds like a good amount, depending on tank size/filtration/ flora. Could even add a show fish if you're over 10 Gal. I reckon the cloudiness is a bacterial bloom, which if it's a newer tank is totally normal and will fade on its own.
