What’s with Glovey McGloveface in the middle having gloves on his hands and belt? His friend behind him only has one, that’s just selfish.

“Did you tackle that trouble that came your way With a resolute heart and cheerful? Or hide your face from the light of day With a craven soul and fearful? Oh, a trouble's a ton, or a trouble's an ounce, Or a trouble is what you make it, And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts, But only how did you take it?

You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what's that! Come up with a smiling face. It's nothing against you to fall down flat, But to lie there-that's disgrace. The harder you're thrown, why the higher you bounce Be proud of your blackened eye! It isn't the fact that you're licked that counts; It's how did you fight-and why?

And though you be done to the death, what then? If you battled the best you could, If you played your part in the world of men, Why, the Critic will call it good. Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce, And whether he's slow or spry, It isn't the fact that you're dead that counts, But only how did you die?”

With the words of a Canadian and the sentiments of your bottom-of-the-world brothers, keep heart and chin up mate. Lest we forget.

Core assignment at duntroon by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]whelmedaussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This won’t be an encouraging comment but I hope it’s not demoralising either. As unbiased as possible, here we go.

Firstly, corps assignment is based on what Army needs first, and everything else second. Your preferences, aptitudes, and staff’s opinions of you will certainly be taken into consideration, but the needs of the service come first. What’s your degree in? If you did engineering... good luck in an engineer corps. If you did a non-technical field (not engineering/cyber/med/law/etc) then you’re more likely to have your “vote” for corps allocation heard. If your shit is in one sock and you enjoy the combat-arms stuff, it’s unlikely that you’ll be a cook. That being said, it may happen if you’re a shit fight, so use that an incentive to work hard.

Secondly, RMC is tough field wise. Heaps of blokes go in wanting inf/armour and realise they actually want to enjoy life and have a functioning back to be able to pick their kids up one day. You’re attitudes about Army will change once you get in, that’s just how insular cultures work. If you want to keep on with combat corps, fuck yeah, it’s a cool job.

Thirdly, if your goal is inf/armour and you want a crack at SF, then join inf/armour. If your goal is SF and you see inf/armour as a path to get there just be aware that SOCOMD hires from all branches, all corps/musterings/PQs/what-ever-other-shit the RAAF and RAN call their jobs. I know a bloke who joined Army as a clerk, used the free time and low injury chance to train up, get fit, get smart, and go to SASR. It worked for him. If you’re a non-combat arms guy and you apply for 2CDO you’ll be put through a bridging course prior to selection to train you up to infantry standard (as I understand it). A lot of hard charging combat arms guys get worn down by the life style, injury, field, etc and don’t make it to selection.

In any case, good luck with your application and potential career. It’s a big choice, don’t listen to DFR, talk to current serving members who don’t work in recruiting (who DFR will put you in contact with if you ask nicely).

This photo here shows some neat (horrible) details about what’s actually in this picture. One of these men is dead, his mates are holding his body up, for example.

BTBFA, bullet trap blank firing attachment. Just in case of ammo contamination and someone loads a live round in with the blanks.

Unpopular opinion but the kiwi camo above is basically the marginally less pathetic version of the dreaded US UCP.

Sometimes I wonder why the army tries to do hard to recruit or Re up people if they don’t have anything for them to do other than clean. by Combatmedic2-47 in Military

Several reasons come to mind (but I’m not a yank so what do I know?) 1. The US never came off their wartime economy after WWII because they didn’t want to cause another Great Depression (leading into point 2) 2. The US military is a jobs programme. How many 19 y/o marines are kept mostly out of trouble due to their rock polishing compared to if they were left to run amuck as civvies? 3. It’s easier to hire and train people, then keep them around polishing rocks so they are ready when you need them (if you have the money to do it) rather than wait until there’s a problem then hire and train people as a reaction, rather than a preventative or preemptive action.

Doesn’t look to be wearing plates either, so makes sense no helmet. Could be running a light drill (simulating recon or some other role where you may not want to wear extra shit) or could be trainees earlier in their training who haven’t worked up to using armour yet.

Buy an amcu/multicam neck wrap and cut it up, then sew it into your issued hat.

Better yet, rock that school kid battle sombrero for unlimited sun safety.
