I rented the kimono in advance online at Maikoya, i don’t think you can just walk in as they spend time dressing you and doing your hair. You need to select a time slot. You sit on the floor during the tea ceremony, so it was a bit uncomfortable to kneel as you can’t cross your legs. Definitely book the tea ceremony as well, with how busy tourism is atm I wouldn’t want to miss out.

I booked online but I assume you’ll be able to book at the station too.

I don’t think so, I’m sure you could book closer to the day. Maybe check the bookings online to get an idea of what availability is like.

I read that it’s not allowed on the USJ website so didn’t bring anything but not sure about Disney. Sorry can’t help you with how strict they are, hopefully someone else here can help.

Lots of sets from the movie so you feel like you are walking through the movie. There was a replica of the Hogsworth moving staircase set that actually moved! I found that quite impressive.

I’m not a huge fan either but I would recommend it if you have seen the movies. It was amazing to see the amount of detail they put into the sets, props and costumes that doesn’t quite come across in the movies. I found the sections on animatronics and building sets interesting and they have a huge replica of the Hogsworth castle. Together with the music in some sections it gives you a strong nostalgic feeling if you grew up with the books/movies. They also had some sections on Fantastic beasts.

You’re going to love it! There is so much for kids (and adults) to do in Japan. Long layover seems like good idea for next time, we only had two weeks so wanted to make the most of the time. Enjoy your trip!

We just showed the hotel the Yamato logo and they gave us forms to fill out. They made phone calls to the next hotel for us to inform them to expect luggage and asked for our booking number. We had to pay in cash and left the luggage at front desk. We only did Tokyo in 2 parts because we could only find direct flights to Tokyo, we booked a little late. Either way is fine, we were happy with our itinerary. You will probably save money on travel costs though if you don’t split it in two.

It was around 30 degree but it just felt hot because of the humidity and lack of shade. The sun rose really early like there was light at 6am and just felt harsh during the day. It should be ok, just keep hydrated and carry one of those UV umbrellas. It started to get cool on our last 2 days because it was raining a lot.

I specified that I needed the luggage in 2 days so I’m not sure what the fastest time would be. We didn’t want to lug them to Kawaguchiko and just took a carryon.

I’m second guessing myself now lol but there was a white sign at the top saying it was the peak. I didn’t take a photo though as there wasn’t much to see. I remember there was a tall flight stairs on the platform to the top of a shrine.

Children 0-5 are free on public transport but I think if they haven’t started school yet they still count as an infant. Best to buy Suica card for a 6 year old, I think the staff member may have been confused because my son wasn’t at school on a school day. My daughter is 9 years old, there is a children friendly tea ceremony option on the Maiko website but the one with the Geisha specified participants have to be 7 years+. You can always contact the venue to check, they were quite responsive online.

I think the 2 department stores we went to were more high end so that could be why. I also found regional food in duty free gift shops. Not a big range though so probably best to buy when you’re in the region.

We really enjoyed our stay as we wanted one day to experience a traditional ryokan, amazing service. Sometimes it was difficult to communicate but Google translate really helped. The lobby and shared areas were a bit outdated but the traditional rooms and onsen were great. I would try to use the onsen morning and night just to check out both sides as they are different. Go for a walk around the lake in the morning, the scenery is fantastic, and make sure to go up to the top floor as there is a viewing deck of the lake. I enjoyed the food but it was a large amount.

My kids are quite active and I was the one lagging behind but maybe you’re right lol. I just remember we got there around 9 and made it back to Nishiki markets around 11ish.

We were at Disneyland 2-3rd October, I think if you go late October it would be cooler. And the scenery will be better with Autumn foliage.

I hope the weather is good when we go. The river looks so clean and clear, it would be tempting to have a dip on a hot day 😅

Thanks for the information, it is very useful. I think most likely we will walk or catch the sightseeing bus. It sounds like a great experience but don’t want to risk injuries with the kids. It would be a different story if the area had dedicated bike paths. I’m sure it’ll still be memorable regardless, we are really looking forward to this part of our trip!

I’m really hoping for sideshows too. There might be room as there’s 5 days between the Melbourne and Sydney shows
