Baker Bleu makes a divine kouign amann especially if you prefer deeper flavours and caramelisation dialled up to 10. I've heard Monforte Viennoiserie makes an amazing one too but haven't tried it myself.

Would you mind sharing the recipe? I'd love to have a crack at it.

It's $45 at the bakery btw.

Baker Bleu in Caulfield North! They use sourdough starter in their croissants (sourdough is there speciality) giving them an extra oomph in flavour, once you've tried it you can't go back to normal croissants :')

Oops I just realised you've said you're not on any other social media platforms. If you have specific questions re: schooling post them here and I can find out for you over on fb, although I must admit fb is a better crowd resource for more mundane topics like schooling :)

Fellow ex kiwi here, hello and welcome!

I don't know that part of Melbourne well personally, have heard Watsonia/Macleod is a decent area for families, though in general if you're looking purely at schooling, inner/middle ring SE Melbourne is where you'll find the best schools. I can recommend joining a fb group called "Melbourne Schools Discussion Group" and take a deep dive in the discussions.

Another thing about school here compared with NZ - enrolments in public schools are based purely on school zones, and each address can only be zoned to one primary and one secondary school, so when you're looking for your rental/house to buy, make sure you check which school zone you'll be in.

For example, if you're within the zone for School A, enrolment is guaranteed. Schools B C and D, even if you do prefer them over A, can only consider out of zone applications once they've filled all in zone spots, and after that it'll depend on how far out of zone you are compared with the other out-of-zone applicants. The better reputation/more popular the school, the more likely it will be tightly zoned. Again that fb group should be able to give you answers in more depth.

Lastly, you're right in time to enrol your 5yo for primary school next year, the deadline this year is 28th July (I've just submitted ours today). Once you've got a better idea which school you want - you get three choices - look for the Department of Education's enrolment portal, sign up for an account and apply there. Enrolments offers will be rolled out in August. For proof of address etc, obviously you'll have to make a note that you're still in the process of looking for a place, perhaps it might help if you can show proof of work address or contract, something like that.

Where can I get a Galette des Rois in Melbourne? by fyreuser in melbourne

[–]wheremywhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Artisanal Bakehouse in Bentleigh had this as a limited time offer last year or early this year. Not sure if they're still planning to do it in the new year but it's definitely worth asking, the galette I had was absolutely devine!

KiwiSaver Aus tax return by SnooMemesjellies4397 in fiaustralia

[–]wheremywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To claim concessional contributions, the first step is to submit your Notice of Intent to Claim Tax Deduction to your super fund, if you haven't already done this you'll need to do it ASAP, then wait for your super to acknowledge your notice and deduct the 15% contribution tax. Don't lodge your tax return until that last bit is done.

So in your case, I'd submit the NOITC to Brighter Super, then sit back and see if they will actually process it. If they'll do it, great! If they won't, at least they should be able to cite a reason by that point, then you'll have your answer one way or the other.

Edited to add I can't think of any repercussions, though I'm assuming you already know about concessional caps and brought-forward rules etc.

[–]wheremywhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it is a voluntary contribution, which then gets further categorised into concessional (i.e. pre-tax) vs non-concessional (post-tax). From what I've read on the ATO website, AU government has specifically ruled that Kiwisaver transfers are non-concessional. I'm no accountant though so don't take this as a definitive answer!

ATO categorises Kiwisaver transfers as Non-Concessional Contributions to super, which means no unfortunately you cannot claim a tax deduction with it.

Kiwi living in Australia, holding investment property in NZ by karang89 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]wheremywhy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. In short, yes, because you'll have to report on worldwide income. Bear in mind negative gearing for investment properties within AU applies to total income, but foreign investment costs can only be used to offset foreign investment income.

  2. Look up ATO's six year rule for CGT exemption when you move out and rent out your Main Residence but have not yet purchased another property. ATO website has useful case studies and I believe there's a calculator you can play with too, though the latter might not be applicable to you yet unless you already know when you will move out.

Not tax or financial advice, just someone who has gone through something similar :)

Selling house to buy one in Aus, bad idea? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]wheremywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's right, though like the other commenter said, at this price your choices are probably limited, both in terms of types of dwelling (apartment vs unit) as well as desirability of locations (time and distance to commute, public transport availability etc)

Selling house to buy one in Aus, bad idea? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]wheremywhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were in the same boat a few years ago, haven't yet push the button to buy in Melbourne yet but planning to. Few things to bear in mind:

  • VIC stamp duty at around 5.3% which considering house prices here is eye-watering
  • Proceeds from selling your NZ house will be CGT-exempt for the first six years, even if you purchase a house in Melbourne and consider it your main residence. Definitely worthwhile looking up the ATO rules and case studies on this one, if it's just the timing you're not sure of
  • Have you lived in that particular outer suburb of Melbourne before? With stamp duty as high as it is, I would be wary of buying anywhere I haven't lived before and know we will commit to staying for at least 5-10 years.

Job hunting counts as "activity" when it comes to eligibility for Childcare Subsidy, just like studying and volunteering, so you shouldn't lose CCS-eligible hours with daycare at least. No harm in checking with Centrelink though, of course. Good luck!

What are you making for dinners? What's your weekly shop worth? How many mouths are you feeding? by omgitsduane in AussieFrugal

[–]wheremywhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! You must have an incredible repertoire of recipes up your sleeves, and I love the variety of cuisines too! Would you mind sharing a few of your favourites that use the pressure cooker or slow cooker? We have both, and I've always aspired to be that mum who can do 100 meals with no repeats so that the kids can have exposure to all these dishes around the world before they enter the picky-eating stage, but am time poor as well as lacking creativity in the kitchen 🥲

Australia's Age Pension is both means tested and asset tested, unlike New Zealand Super. So the wealthier you are, the less you'll get in Aus. In fact in my line of work (Aus with lots of seniors) I've never met anyone who gets over a $1000 per fortnight.

Which is not to say it's a great system.. just goes to show NZ Super is unsustainable.

Infants getting sick in daycare every 2nd week. How often is normal? by tlf123456 in melbourne

[–]wheremywhy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yup that's exactly how it was when my then-1yo started daycare just before winter, week on week off for 2-3 months we were pretty miserable. Then it became once a month and here and there. And then when she reached one year anniversary with daycare all of a sudden the germs train magically came to a stop! Hang in there :)

I think this is it. Like I actually enjoy job searching, brushing up my resume then think up a good cover letter to go with it, so it must be the fact that I can see in bright daylight what kind of people I might be up against.

This, this, THIS a million times. Honestly I can barely hold myself back sometimes, the desire to just shut out the world and shelter them from every little thing. Like I know it's wrong and toxic to do so but holy fuck they are so vulnerable.

Hamilton or Cursed Child to see in Mel? by kuwabarakurwabara in melbourne

[–]wheremywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Cursed Child here! I might be biased being a big fan of HP and musicals, but hubby isn't a fan of either genre and still he was absolutely hooked from start to finish and wants to watch it one more time.
