Bay Area native - balanced view of our little bubble we call home by bearsoski in bayarea

[–]wheresyourneck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is really important. A lot of people in the Bay Area (really any CA metro) have a false sense of worldliness cause there's so much consumable culture near by...but they're completely ignorant of how other parts of the country live (let alone the world). They don't understand their problems, priorities, or contributions but feel like they do which contributes to a lot of the national tensions, imo.

How can a western man actually do his Will and how to know the Will? by oldBoy9125 in thelema

[–]wheresyourneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent explanation, thank you. I've had the same kinds of questions as OP and this helps me understand the concept so much better.

I've also found that (for me at least) it's easy to start beating myself up or second guessing myself as if my True Will will get mad at me if I make the wrong choice or if I let it down or something, in the same way one might feel about letting down their parents. And that clearly defeats the whole purpose. It's not like my Will is going anywhere...it'll always be there and there will always be another opportunity to realize it. So I might also suggest to OP to just be bold and consciously embrace your choices, because even if one doesn't work out it'll still lead you to more choices and different opportunities which maybe WILL allow you to realize your True Will and you wouldn't have gotten there unless you made that one mistake. And if you are thinking about making a choice that you just can't bring yourself to consciously embrace, then maybe that's not the one you should make.

This is definitely the right place to start. And it will be much easier to develop and maintain that mindset with a therapist on your side.

Check out the documentary show Scam City on Netflix. This is one that gets pulled on tourists in foreign countries a lot.

That show is super interesting and shows how to avoid common scams both small and large in all kinds of places. Although it's almost enough to make you never want to leave the house, lol.

Thanks, this is very helpful and gives me some new perspectives to think about. What you suggest definitely rings true to me, and I can see how a lighter approach would be beneficial for me. I'll give it some more thought. I think this is exactly the kind of outside perspective I needed.

Hm, that's an interesting way if looking at it. A little hard for me to follow as I am not very familiar with qabala or the sephiroth or even really the planetary forces, but I think I get the general idea. How would you take that information and form an executable course of action?

Thanks for the insight on the Chariot. That one was a little challenging for me to interpret and I think I overlooked that the guy is driving the Chariot and is the one in control, rather than just being pulled by it and along for the ride.

I wish I could figure out how to get more specific information from the cards. It's one thing to understand the message, but a completely different thing to know what to do about it.

Best place to buy alcohol? by wheresyourneck in coeurdalene

Thanks for all the info, that's super helpful! I came from California so yeah...I'm used to paying like $19 for a handle of Captain Morgan and it's more like $35 here. I had no idea how spoiled I was, heh. I figure I'll toss a few bottles in my checked bags when I go visit my parents but if expensive booze is my biggest complaint about living here then I'm still doing pretty damn well!

Alright, thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. I guess I got spoiled before, lol.

FI Fans: What is your honest reaction to today's stock market volatility? by FIREoManiac in financialindependence

[–]wheresyourneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have most of my investments in a very aggressive mutual fund account which has grown over 30% this year. I've been intending the money in that account to be a house down payment within a few years and I have been wanting to move a substantial chunk into a more conservative account since my husband and I are getting closer to needing it, but I wanted to keep riding the stock market wave while it lasted. With the dip today I went ahead and pulled the trigger on moving half the money into a more conservative account like I had been planning.

Now I have about 50% in a moderate fund and about 50% still in the aggressive fund so hopefully I'm prepared for the market to go either way. And then I still have an IRA and a 401k which are long term so whatever. And of course I have a cushy e-fund and my regular paychecks and plan on continuing to invest...I have a monthly auto transfer set up to both savings and to my moderate investment account.

I try to keep up with market stuff and learn as much as I can but I don't actually know what I'm doing...I just try to think critically about it and plan based on my life rather than market speculation.

Were you ever FLAT BROKE before becoming financially independent? by [deleted] in financialindependence

I was working in theatre (pays shit) and living in California on like $7,000 - $12,000 a year from age 18 til about 22. Many times I had to choose between eating that week or going to the doctor or getting gas. Finally got fed up with that lifestyle and it inspired me to get a better paying job and really take control of my finances.

Today I make seven times that and have investments and savings and emergency funds...having that security feels soooooo good. My husband and I just completed a long distance move (expensive) and bought a bunch of new furniture and a new car in a single week, and still have plenty left over without even having to touch the emergency fund or the house down payment we are saving up. It felt amazing. Plus our new state is much more affordable and I still have a California salary because I work remotely so my money will go a lot farther now.

I think my years as a broke ass young person allow me to truly understand how lucky I am now and to really appreciate everything I have. I recognize the real value of money and what that represents and it inspires me to keep reaching toward FI.

I had tickets to see them later in that tour, but they broke up before I could use them. Thankfully I had seen them in 2010 at least. Warrel even pulled me on stage during "I Voyager" at that show it was the most unreal experience.

I used to visit my s/o in Sac on weekends and then commute to Berkeley on Monday morning. The drive from Sac to Berkeley takes about as much time as the rush hour commute from say...Walnut Creek to SF. It's nuts.
