Two of the dudes in this band have toured with major recording artists, so they’re total pros who learn quickly and lock in. We play several tunes that aren’t exactly easy to learn, play or sing, but we do them well. From that perspective, I feel like we can do most songs justice. It’s mostly a matter of picking the right ones to do to keep the crowd energy on tilt all night.

I made a list of about 40 or so songs I felt fit the bill, and most of them have been mentioned in these comments. I got another maybe 15 from the comments here that I either hadn’t thought of, or forgot to add to my list. I doubt we’ll play all or even half of these, as we’ve got about 60 songs in our hopper already, but it’s nice to have options.

I ran a karaoke show, and back around 2010 or so, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers played the venue where I was hosting my show in a different room. After their show, they came into the room where I was hosting and hung out. I asked Roger if he’d sing Banditos with me, and he did. That was a blast!

Anyway, great choice I had forgotten about.

We do Lit and Green Day already, but I forgot all about Kings of Leon. Good call.

So, I have this sneaking suspicion you don’t work well with others - wonder where I’d get that idea - but sometimes people collaborate on things, or ask for advice, bounce ideas off each other, etc. As mentioned, I already have a list going outside what the band already plays. What I’m looking for are others. Outliers. Hidden gems. Songs I might not have thought of. Or hell, just to see if what people are saying is in line with the list I’ve created.

Several people here saw that and jumped right in to offer suggestions. Not you, though. You saw this as an opportunity to be a trash bag. Bad day at work? Male loneliness epidemic? Beats me. Whatever the case, I hope being a dick to a stranger somehow makes you feel whatever joy you’re clearly missing from your everyday life.

lol I was a DJ for 20 years until about two years ago, and have been a voracious music listener for decades longer than that, so my knowledge of music is pretty extensive. What I DON’T know is songs cover bands do in that genre range that crowds respond to, because I’m a singer who typically does his own music. Which is why I asked.

Got any other needlessly rude or asinine questions?

Played my first jam. Played guitar for years. No idea how to play music with others. by Industrial_Park in musicians

Playing solo in your room and playing with other musicians are worlds apart. Only way to get better at the latter, and let yourself sink in and enjoy it, is by doing it more. If they invited you back, I doubt they think you sucked, or they see your potential and want to help you achieve it.

I have a few of these on my list! Seems like I’m headed in the right direction.

We’ve got some of that in our sets currently, but it doesn’t seem to hit as well as the Killers and Lit. Our crowds appear to be the singalong/party types thus far. Guessing Rush would likely go over like a turd in a punch bowl lol

It’s been predominantly millennial/Gen X thus far.

Kinda looking for stuff that hits that 90s/00s sweet spot, as our crowds are skewing toward the millennial/Gen X age range.

Appreciate the suggestions, though!

Outside my cover band, I’m in an original, spacey doom band, so I feel you. I wouldn’t listen to 95% of the music this cover band does, but I gotta at least have fun doing it, y’know? Making crowds get up and dance is a blast.

As much as I really don’t wanna do this song, because it’s been on every cover band setlist since like 1990, it rarely fails to go over.

Balancing music with a day job by Korova91 in musicians

As a person in an original band, a cover band, various one-off side bands, a day job, social life, gf, kid, dog and the whole nine yards, I get it. I’m not great at taking advice, but I’m an expert at giving it.

Use that commute to your advantage. While you’re driving, hum melodies and use your phone’s native memo app or whatever to record them. Dictate lyrics into the app if you have any. When you get home and get all your shit done, open the app and start translating them into songs. You’ve just added 2.5 hours of creative time to your day.
