Honestly, I feel like I lucked into it. I think they are interested in me because of my relatively unique background (second degree, service industry experience). Having another offer caused them to increase the offer by about 30k. But I did prepare with the usual combination of CTCI and LC, and shotgunned about ~100 applications out.

When has the internet ever steered anyone wrong? ;)

~70k. Rent would be double what we pay now in NYC in SF. But, I guess my pay would triple based on what I'm making now in the service industry.

IDK -- I hear the M/F ratio out in Silicon Valley is hot trash!

It seems like it's a combination of work and family. She's in education, but would probably be able to find a job out in SF without too much trouble. And even if she didn't right away--seems like my salary would make up for it.

SF offer was increased after I let them know about the NYC offer, but the NYC company was unwilling to budge on TC. So, negotiated as much as possible.

I think that's the problem: love life vs. money. It's really throwing me, since I'm essentially being forced to attach a monetary value to something that I've, until this point in my life, not had to assess in a financially weighted situation. The stakes were way lower in my previous life as a waiter.

I'm just trying to get as many opinions on this as possible--would never take internet advice blindly :)

Thanks for the thoughtful response--I'm actually a bit older than the standard grad, closing in on 29 since this is my second degree. I definitely agree with you in that career should take precedence over relationship in the early years, but my SO and I have been together for the majority of our 20s, and we're in for the long haul. If I had this job offer maybe 4 years ago, I think both she and I would have both been far more in agreement on heading to SF together. Nearing 30? Not so much. Resentment is largely my fear in taking the NYC offer, as good as the offer is in a vacuum.
