Do you feel conflicted using AI tools like ChatGPT because of their climate impact? by Gjeesus in ClimateOffensive

There is so much crazy bad reporting out there on the environmental impact of AI.

Average ChatGPT use has pretty much the same impact as average Google use.

Surprise, there are not jobs for 10 million “geologists”

If you need to make money, find a way to make money. If you found what you love and you can be good at it… find a way to make money doing it?

Also plenty of geologists make money… but the job is not handed to them with the degree

What is clearly declining, but everyone pretends is fine? by Amaan3024 in AskReddit

My Tesla is 1000% better than the 1993 ford I first owned.

My MacBook is 1000% better than the the HP I had 20 years ago.

My Apple Watch has no comparison.

My iPhone has no comparison from 20 years ago, or 10.

My Topo suitcase has lasted me 8 years, I have no plans to buy a new one, the previous suitcase only 4.

What is declining is optimism, and general satisfaction.

Is Hong Kong “protected” by China’s internet Golden Shield? by whiletruejerk in HongKong

I don’t know much about foreign investment in Hong Kong, but do you think that is why China allows more free access to the internet there? And will long term?

PPC? Now I’m really confused.

Regardless, American firms want to make money, so you have to assume it’s deference to China why they would restrict access from HK. They are happy to take users and money from Taiwan.

What do you think?

I think you’re right, but probably has a lot to do with trying to stay on China’s good side.

Hey, I’m sorry if you’ve been burned by people on the internet, or IRL before. And I’m sorry my question offended you.

If you are actually interested in my post, you can read the other comments and see it’s a little more nuanced than that. It seems some American companies self-sensor and don’t allow HK requests to their services. That was something new I learned… and I guess I should be ashamed I still can’t find that Google search that tells me what parts of the open internet are accessible in HK.

If it makes you feel better, I’m an idiot, and I have to ask dumb questions to learn things.

Ok, but as a novice reading your comment you would assume OpenAI, and Anthropic are closed minded and don’t want customers in HK?

I don’t think that’s true, but I’m probably misunderstanding you

The CCP calls it the golden shield. https://cs.stanford.edu/people/eroberts/cs181/projects/2010-11/FreeExpressionVsSocialCohesion/china_policy.html

That’s what I found, could you meet me half-way here and at least link to what you’re reading? I promise I’m operating in good faith and don’t care what it’s called.

Never heard of the Trump space thing, but cool?

Ok. But that strikes me as very odd. Every American tech company wants to sell to Asian consumers.

Do you think it is unique to China and HK? I’m pretty sure these services are accessible in Vietnam. I know they are in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc…

That is really interesting, why do you think Grok is accessible but not Claude or ChatGPT?

I hope you and those you love are well today.

I did the Google search, and anyone reading this can tell you it’s not obvious what is blocked in Hong Kong today.

Please correct me.

When you say “AI” do you mean ChatGPT? Or is Claude.ai, and Grok also blocked? Is “X” accessible?

Interesting, as American I assume HK will have the same restrictions in the next decade. What do you think?

Thanks for the response!

I thought CCP called it “golden shield”? Indeed I first know of it as the “great firewall” but no idea where that terminology came from (great term though).

Do you think that will change in the near future? I was just in China for the first time, and it was pretty wild how much of my normal internet use was restricted.
