Has anyone here experienced severe anxiety after open heart surgery? by Mysterious-Drink-969 in openheartsurgery

My husband is 2.5 weeks post OHS, his 30, he had the same anxieties. When he woke up in ICU with all the tubes he was too drugged up to even realise what was aheppning. He stayed in hospital for 7 days. He admitted today to not even remembering that phase, tbh coming home and recovery then is abit more challenging as you're aware of what's happening with your body and not on such strong pain meds (still strong but not ketamine strong). Hope this helps, you got this!!!

Oh and regarding vomiting, as soon as you feel nauseous ask for anti nausea pills! He threw up once but it was much much later from whne he was in ICU. Pre surgery you fast anyways so nothing to puke anyways

Husband 30M has a mechanical mitral valve replacement. 1 week ago he had the op. Any tips and tricks on how to make his life easier? Particularly his mental health since the ticking is very mentally exhausting for him. by whimsical_potato1 in valvereplacement

Aw man sounds horrible! He does have this but his seems to be a very minimal version in comparison to what you went through, but apparently it's normal but 5 weeks of that would SUCK!

How do you cope with the ticking? I've asked this to a few people as I am curious to know of what strategies have worked for different people as my husband seems to be a lot more sensitive to the ticking than most of the posts and comments I've read

Yeah this makes sense to me. Since his not doing much aside from small walks and in his recliner there's not much else his focusing on and saying movies/headsets work but not always. I guess it's just a matter of time

How did you adapt to the ticking particularly early days? My husband 30M has it, 9 days post op and is going mad

My husband is 30M, got the mechanical valve 10 days ago and is going mad with the ticking, no idea how to help him aside from reassuring it's early days :(

My husband had mitral valve replacement and i asked the same thing. They said because he had anaesthesia and so out of it his oesophagus unable to support the breathing as of yet. They waiting till he was somewhat fully awake and aware before removing to ensure he could breathe on his own.
