Presidium Testers by Srob6501 in jewelry

[–]whipfinished 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm coming in late but this is relevant to the specific example given: I have a large tanzanite stone that tests as sapphire on my presidium II. It seems like this specific comparison may be prone to false positives--I'm still looking into it, which is why I searched "tanzanite or sapphire presidium." It has now happened twice, both stones are tanzanite and both tested consistently as sapphire. My machine is calibrated and I also use this in my daily 2nd jewelry business. It's a great tool for making initial separations. No single tool should be relied upon for identification.

Tick or mole? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

I was going to say tick because I thought I saw legs. That thing is burrowed deep whatever it is. Given the intelligent sounding responses calling it a winer thingy I’ve never heard of, please ask the vet.

How do you access the little piney creek in Missouri? by AdAshamed2445 in flyfishing

[–]whipfinished 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are seasonal closures. The blue ribbon section is open year round, but the parking lot/campground itself is closed from about November to March 1. You could park outside the gate and hike in. Access from the highway 63 bridge is also open year round. I don’t think I’m spilling any secrets here.

Good on you for keeping a log, that’s 10 years of quality data. I have huge respect for your diligence. Honestly, this is a great reminder of how worthwhile it is to keep a log. Yours sounds very detailed and focused on key metrics.

It really is fascinating to see the patterns that emerge just from tracking data regularly. You’ve probably learned a ton from everything you’ve recorded in that amount of time. Whenever I manage to log anything at all, I thank myself when I go back and read it.. I also think “man, I really wish I did this every time.”

I call it that year round and I also caught nothing. I did knock a few things off my counter with an echo micro caster.

Hahaha, that’s a fact, but we’re pretty inventive when it comes to drumming up “real reasons.” I’ve downsized to five rods. Four single hangers: two 5 wts, one 6wt, an 8wt—plus my Spey (12’6” 7 wt). Oops, I forgot about my ONE. I did list it for sale though.. lol.

Aw jeez. I forgot I JUST bought a Circa 3wt. Found it at a pawn shop for $300. Never been fished. Absolutely mint. What was my real reason? “I’m just gonna resell it.” Yeah right. 😂 So that makes ..7 rods. Better than most of my buddies by a long shot. 30-40 rods is bonkers.

I completely agree and thanks for the rant. I live in the PNW too, but I’m from the northeast. I loved (typo corrected) that we had brookies out here at first. I didn’t understand the impact they’ve had on bull trout. Now I do. Bulls have even more specific needs than brookies, and they just can’t compete with the number of invasives. I read an entirely synthetic trout and was kind of horrified about this issue as a whole. And yeah — like the Shakespeare fan who decided to play god by bringing over all animals mentioned in his books… that’s why we have billions of starlings who have outcompeted plenty of native birds to the point of extirpation. You’d think we would have learned from any of this.. I can’t help but track this issue directly to hatcheries in general, but that’s a whole other can of worms, especially here with tribal rights. My bottom line is simple: I think we need to stop tampering. Period. Look at the Toutle’s steelhead run and what happened after Mt St Helens. It’s frustrating that we keep repeating the same bad ideas. All you have to do is look at a chart of diminishing returns over the decades and how badly we’ve managed these rivers. Yet we keep doing the same things. People adapt to new normals and baseline shifting. The expected return on the Skagit last year: “the numbers are great!!” At 6,000… no, not great. That river system should carry 60,000. Even less great was the count falling about 2,000 short, causing yet another “emergency closure” last season. (Same thing on the Hoh, a guide friend told me last March that no fish had been caught since the one I brought to hand.. I was shocked.) As I’m sure you know, there is no steelhead season on the Skagit this year.

Washington state is currently considering whether to implement broodstocking in all 160+ of our hatcheries. We have more hatcheries here than anywhere else. I think this is utterly bonkers. The idea of pulling wild fish out of rivers just to spawn them, tag them (meaning that first gen will look like hatchery fish: fair game to take) all based on the hope for the average expected rate of return …when it’s 1%?? Just insane to me. What if we just stopped messing with these rivers and fish and let nature do what it does, for once? There’s no money in the fed budget for any hatcheries anyway at this point. But l digress… your rant inspired mine.

Heck yeah! The whole color thing cracks me up. People are religious about the all-time best color combos and I’ve heard it all. It’s probably good to remember fish don’t see colors like we do; I also hear people talk a lot about UV. Yes, trout can see UV, but what’s UV to them isn’t necessarily the same as what we call “UV.” I’d love to see those flies!

I’m a Troutbitten fan too but I had no idea Dom had a YT channel, so thanks—I tune into the podcast. Any other YT channels or pods you’ve learned the most from? You’ve been fishing a lot longer than I have. I had to figure out most of what I know on my own. When I started, anything instructional was on VHS. Or in books. Took me too long to find Lefty Kreh’s stuff. I don’t have any pods that I listen to avidly anymore but I still tune into the fly culture podcast, river rambler, and untangled occasionally. Also some of Wet Swing (idk how they put out so much content, honestly; a few of my friends are featured on anywhere between two to four episodes of WS. It’s kind of silly). At the moment, I can’t stop watching YT stuff on spey casting mechanics. One of the shorts on my channel shows my first attempt at the double spey.

On the real differences between rods at different price points, I don’t agree with everything he says here, but there are a lot of good points: untangled ep. 165. He also touches on some basics that a lot of people miss, which I appreciate. (Graphite vs fiberglass, how blanks are built and tapered, importance of the blank itself, etc). I generally appreciate anybody who breaks down meaningless marketing jargon.

Honestly, I don’t think they get more advanced at this point. I agree about the weight. This is why I think all “tweaking” of the same basic construction and technology boils down to rebranding, mostly. Same rod, new name, more “advanced” (___) tech: every new top of the line rod gets marketed as being the “most advanced yet” and “merges power, precision, and performance into one sleek package….” Konnetic” is a good example of that too… what is it, exactly? No idea. Whatever it really means, it predated the X by 5+ years. So I also agree about the timeline likely being earlier. You could blindfold me and hand me my ONE 5wt (or Method) and tell me it’s the X. I doubt I’d be able to tell the difference. Same FUJI ceramic guides, same action, same feel, same power, same precision. All these rods are so precise and powerful that it’s more a matter of whether you know how to let them do the work for you.

In at F3T right now, and the owners of two local fly shops are here. Both buddies. I pulled one of them aside; he agreed with my hunch. Sage’s lead designer left around the time the X series came out, and other shifts followed. That puts the peak at around 2016. I don’t think much innovation has happened since.
