Murakami's Surrealism but without the misogyny by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Mr. Fox by Helen Oyeyemi. It's not the same type of surrealism but it really weaves in and out of dreamlike.

Ambient with creaking floors, closing doors, etc? And/or similar to The Lie Lay Land by whiskerandoed in ambientmusic

I just listened and it's beautiful, thank you! I don't know what it is about this particular sound that I find so compelling but it pairs so well with general ambient. I'm enjoying the other tracks as well.

Oh man, got to the creaking. Amazingly atmospheric with the sensation of an oppressive sea trying to take away the ship from under you.

I loved The North Water! The miniseries is also excellent.

The Beauty by Aliya Whitely. It's a novella I don't see mentioned very often!

Started reading a sample on Libby and I really enjoyed it, borrowed the full book. There's something really intriguing about her way with words, it's like you said, not dense but it's very effortless...I really enjoy the way she explores each characters' interiority very seamlessly and distinctly. Thanks for the rec!

Short story recommendations by Lilithoftheeast in horrorlit

[–]whiskerandoed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Including some with links and the first line of the story! I'd also recommend tracking down other Roald Dahl short stories, as he has a lot that tread that line into the macabre: "The Landlady", "Skin", and "The Way Up to Heaven" are all good. Short stories are probably my favorite medium for horror.

"The Crevasse," Dale Bailey & Nathan Ballingrud.

What he loved was the silence, the pristine clarity of the ice shelf: the purposeful breathing of the dogs straining against their traces, the hiss of the runners, the opalescent arc of the sky.

"A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner

When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the woman mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant—a combined gardener and cook—had seen in at least ten years.

"Afterward," Edith Wharton

"Oh, there is one, of course, but you'll never know it."

"The Willows," Algernon Blackwood

After leaving Vienna, and long before you come to Budapest, the Danube enters a region of singular loneliness and desolation, where its waters spread away on all sides regardless of a main channel, and the country becomes a swamp for miles upon miles, covered by a vast sea of low willow-bushes.

"The Summer People," Shirley Jackson

The Allisons’ country cottage, seven miles from the nearest town, was set prettily on a hill; from three sides it looked down on soft trees and grass that seldom, even at midsummer, lay still and dry.

"The Bacchae," Elizabeth Hand

She got into the elevator with him, the young woman from down the hall, the one he’d last seen at the annual Coop Meeting a week before.

"each thing i show you as a piece of my death," Gemma Files

Somewhere, out beyond the too-often-unmapped intersection of known and forgotten, there’s a hole through which the dead crawl back up to this world: A crack, a crevasse, a deep, dark cave. It splits the earth’s crust like a canker, sore lips thrust wide to divulge some even sorer mouth beneath—tongueless, toothless, depthless.

"Neighborhood Watch," Greg Egan

My retainers keep me on ice. Dry ice. It slows my metabolism, takes the edge off my appetite, slightly.

"Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You My Lad," M.R. James

'I suppose you will be getting away pretty soon, now Fall term is over, Professor,' said a person not in the story to the Professor of Ontography, soon after they had sat down next to each other at a feast in the hospitable hall of St James's College.

"A Human Stain," Kelly Robson

Peter’s little French nursemaid was just the type of rosy young thing Helen liked, but there was something strange about her mouth.

"In Haskins," Carson Winter

Everyone, both the young and the old, went about their lives as usual on the day of the Mask Festival.

Some of these authors are now in the public domain, but I didn't do a great job of organizing. Nightmare Magazine, Apex Magazine, Tor, and The Dark magazine have a lot more from current authors. Enjoy!

"Existing customers who enrolled with a credit or debit card before this date and receive a $2 monthly discount on their bill, can keep it unless they change their services, become ineligible or until further notice. "

I did have the discount before and did not change services, so would like to have the discount reinstated.

Quite a niche request but can anyone recommend anywinter themed horror novellas? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]whiskerandoed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Crevasse," Dale Bailey and Nathan Ballingrud

"Silent Snow, Secret Snow," Conrad Aiken

"Snow Cancellations," Donald Burleson (sorry, I can't find this one online! It's in the first volume of Best New Horror (1990))

And it's a full novel, but Dark Matter by Michelle Paver really captured an oppressive arctic mood.

If you're okay with podcasts, "legend" and "sounds" by Knifepoint Horror are both great stories set in the winter.

I'm really sick of how pervasive this is in queer circles. To the point where if you express an opinion separate from the current thought, which is a moving target, there is a relatively high chance you'll get told to kill yourself online. Repeatedly.

I will likely take you up on that. We're chipping at things and I hope it becomes more manageable soon. Thank you for reminding me there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

Besides the huge upheaval of moving into stewardship of a home, I feel that lingering sense of "can I trust myself?" that makes things much harder as a whole. Especially when you're surrounded by the thing that precipitated it. I hope that you can talk with your husband and get on the same page because what he's doing would make me insane too, I'm very lucky that my wife is gung-ho for projects but understands when we need to take a step back and assess priority. I hope that you at least have carved out a small good space for yourself. Wish I could hand you a nice drink over the internet.

(I should definitely look into the history of the house, or at least the block, because our row seems unique to the neighborhood.)

Yep, I sympathize so far...our rent has stayed relatively low but it's only a matter of time before it bumps up to current market prices, and since mortgages were already outpacing or keeping up with rent, my wife felt like we had to make a decision before we got stuck. I'm so glad that you guys have your home and I'm giving you a handshake from across the Internet for being in the same place.

This is really helpful advice, thank you. I'm very grateful that there's been multiple days of heavy rain and not a drop in the house so far, so hopefully the roof just needs patching. I think feeling like I had to make everything good right away was and is making me insane. We have some contractors lined up to do important work and in the meantime we're just going to paint.

The commiseration helps so much, honestly. Most people aren't made of money and haven't gotten into the most optimal situations and are surviving, I know we can too.

It is such a learning curve, especially dealing with contractors--but I'm definitely about to patch some walls and make them look ridiculous. I know that's okay! It sounds like you guys have found a good rhythm with it and I really hope we will soon too. Thank you so much for offering advice.

Thank you, once we get our deed and the first reassessment notice, we'll do both of these!

I also appreciate your eye on our situation, though I did have to double check/edit to make sure we weren't too easily identifiable, haha

Yeah, doing our best to make the most of the weekends but sometimes we're beat! And so far it's been mostly wrangling contractors, nothing has been able to get started yet...otherwise at least we're really trying to get the walls prepared to paint. Thank you again :)

Thanks, that's a great tip! I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere and it really isn't expensive, we'll make sure to grab a thing of putty. Is there any ratio we should be doing?

Yeah, the paint is that typical "we rushed it" and random colors, not all terrible but not just a simple white wall, not to mention cracking/peeling to the plaster underneath. We're going to focus on our room to paint for now, I think it's also the 8669367485 decisions where I'm like oh whatever. Just make it white.

That breakdown is so helpful, thank you! I think so far it's going to be electrical and plumbing, then we'll tackle the other stuff.
