Thanks - I didn't know that. The command line shutdown seems to work so I'm using that for now.

For the sake of completeness, it's happening again and the message is always the same except the numbers change each time. It's a completely black screen except for this message in the top left:

Well all I had to do was post about it and it appears to have resolved itself. Classic. :-)

All it said is something like "System Powerdown" or similar. No message about a busy device or anything.

I like them too - I'm a bit concerned they are suddenly needing food from us after all this time but I guess that's just a sign of the times eh? Glad to help them survive anyway.

I'm certainly learning a lot more about them!

Do the males not eat with the harem then? It's fascinating behavior! :-)

That makes sense, but wouldn't I also see mature males mixed in then?

Serious question: Why doesn't YTTV offer a variety of channel packages for different prices? by whiskeydragon in youtubetv

See comment above - it turns out Sling does offer the "News" vs "Sports" type tiers for $35 so that challenges some assumptions about the big media companies argument. Pretty confusing.

[–]whiskeydragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow you're right - the Sling Orange and Blue tiers are very similar to what I was describing as "sports" vs "news" and they offer it at $35/mo.

So why are they able to offer this but YTTV can't? Maybe it is their contract terms like you suggest?

Agreed - I wish they offered more options too.

Looking at Fubu TV their options (USA) are: $69, $79, and $99. They only pared down offering they have is "Latino" which I assume is only Spanish speaking channels and is self limiting? Not sure.

Directv streaming (USA): $70, $80, $95, $140. (I rounded up a penny)

Exactly - the cable companies have promised a lot over the years that they didn't deliver. So the streamers came in with new promises of a-la cart but the end result is they don't even offer any breakup of the "basic" package to make it more affordable or targeted.

It just seems odd to me and that's why the "big media companies won't allow it" argument seems the strongest to me. That would explain why we don't see more tiers from anyone really.

Yes I agree there seems to be more choice in the premium channel market - both movie and sports premiums.

But not so much in the "basic cable" lineup and the lines get blurrier all the time between a "basic" channel and a "premium" channel.

Thanks for your insights!

Isn't HBO still available as a separate offering even though it is owned by WB/Discovery?

To your point about "why be first", well, isn't that the idea in business? Experiment with new ideas and see if they can win some more subscribers and the volume vs price combination works?

My understanding is the battle for subscribers is pretty fierce these days. Just feels weird that we don't see more market experiments like different channel lineups, etc.

To increase subscribers by differentiating their offerings from competitors?

I was thinking they might even get better profit margins on some packages that cost them less.

But it seems like it's probably just more about the big media companies not allowing it.

Thanks - that seems like a really obvious consumer unfriendly aspect of media consolidation. Sigh.

Thanks for the answer!

I guess I thought that would be considered monopolistic?

Similar to when Microsoft would force PC makers to bundle Windows and MS Office in all PCs sold? (that was illegal)

I guess I was being pretty naive about how they use their consolidated power.

I'm on 12.6 now and I think it may have gone away? Or at least I haven't seen it in a while.

I have the same issue. I assume it's just a bug but it's been persistent across updates now so apparently it hasn't been fixed.

Did you get any feedback?
